JA 1275 Oil Fired Locomotive
« on: March 25, 2012, 03:37:25 PM »
Captured this video on my way home from golf.
I love steam locomotives, there is just something about them.
Excuse the camera shake, it was quite windy.

oh, and the short commentary... :)  Is that track well used - like twice a day? Or was the spinning of the wheels due to an undulation or soft track?  That all on your smart phone!!  Nice natural colours too.  And a bit of sunshine, we have bright sunshine here now too.

Graeme,
The commentary is the guy next to me. I said a few words (can you guess which ones?)
We had just been talking about how every time you find the best spot, somebody thinks cool, what a lovely spot & blocks your view :o
It may get 1 train every couple of days.
Mostly timber from the mill up north, and a few containers.
They are considering closing the northland line.
Passenger services were trialled to Helesnville for a while, but with inconsistent service(it could be cancelled at the last second) and poor passenger numbers, it was canned.
This beauty comes thru twice a year, always worth catching.
Pity, there is some lovely scenery between here & Whangarei, and lots of tunnels!

I meant to ask before, is she the grand old girl from Kawakawa?  If it is still there?  Alan would know.

Kawakawa has been disconnected from the main trunk for a while now. Stops at Moerewa.
They have a couple of small switching loco's, not sure about the larger one. It may be static.

Looks like the branchline have had the bridges approved for use. Almost thru to Opua. Lovely coastal run!
JA 1275 lives at Parnell at Mainline Steam.

Thanks - that explains it all... great machines, even if they do run on oil instead of coal!! LOL!  I see the Kingston Flyer is in new good hands now (NZ too) - a semi retired Vineyard owner has just had a disability disease or something and decided to buy it and get it up to running condition and all the rail line etc as well.  It was great news...

Beautiful - I used to travel on coal fired ones many many years ago from Chch to Picton when they still had wooden seats that you could fold over - not very comfortable for the kids though.  Loads of tunnels too where you had to remember to close the windows as the carriages would get filled with smoke if someone forgot.
Brings back many memories.
They also have ones going from Chch to Arthurs Pass here during the winter usually and they are fully booked well in advance.
Thanks for the memories Deano Alan and Graeme.
