The number of Americans exploring a New Zealand recruitment website increased a whopping 146 per cent, just one day after Donald Trump was elected President of the United States.

Beyond Recruitment attracts 30,000 visits every month and Kiwis are the highest source of traffic.

However, chief executive Liza Viz said visitors from the States jumped to the second highest yesterday with the massive 146 per cent increase in just one day.

"This increase in interest in website visitors from the USA isn't surprising based on the shock results coming out of the United States," Viz said.

"Donald Trump being elected as the 45th President has obviously upset a large number of people to such a point where they're seriously exploring life in another country."

Viz said New Zealand needed skilled migrants.

"Skilled candidates from the United States would be welcomed in New Zealand, especially in areas where we are experiencing consistent skills shortages such as IT and transformation, and construction and engineering."

At the same time the Google search "move to New Zealand" skyrocketed, as people living in Oregon, Washington and Florida keyed in the phrase.

Thousands of Americans also flooded to realestate.co.nz to look at homes for sale in New Zealand, with the top five areas searched being Auckland, Wellington, Canterbury, Northland and Otago.

US-based traffic to the website was up 432 per cent compared to November 9 last year.

CEO Brendon Skipper said the US jumped into second place ahead of Australia in terms of visitor numbers on election night.

"While we are not expecting a mass exodus to New Zealand, it will be interesting to see how the trends play out over the coming months as Trump settles in."

California generated the most traffic to realestate.co.nz followed by Texas, Florida, New York and Washington.

Canada Confirms a Stampede of Americans Crashed Immigration Website on Election Night.

On Tuesday night, following the ascendance of a sentient, smushed-up Cheez Doodle to the most powerful office in the world, so many people visited Canada’s informational immigration website that it crashed. Now, officials have confirmed what some already suspected: A large number of those people were desperate Americans presumably plotting their escape.

The CBC reports that a whopping 200,000 people were on the website on election night. Of those stricken souls, 100,000 were visiting from the United States. The total figure dwarfs the 17,000 who were on the site at the same time a week prior.

Given that election night marked the beginning of a new and utterly horrifying national nightmare, the knee-jerk “flight” response is perhaps unsurprising. (Hell, I have an Australian passport, and I dug it up to make sure it wasn’t set to expire anytime soon.) President-elect Trump has promised to deport millions of people, suggested he would create mandatory registration for Muslim Americans, threatened to sweep away the rights of American women, and announced a 100-day plan so mind-numbingly repugnant it borders on satire.

Of course, it’s worth noting that those 100,000 Americans were merely curious about the idea of running away to Canada, and most probably won’t actually go through with it. Still, if you decide to actually flee north, here’s a good primer.
