Severe weather warnings are in place for Wellington and Kapiti with rain and wind expected to continue to lash the region until Saturday morning.
Heavy northwesterly rain is also expected in the Tararua Range.
"In the 24 hours from 9am Friday to 9am Saturday, expect 150 to 300mm of rain about the ranges and foothills, with 80 to 120mm closer to the Horowhenua Kapiti Coast and in northern parts of Wellington. Peak intensities 15 to 25mm per hour," the MetService said.
MetService meteorologist John Law said on Friday morning northwest gusts were reaching 94kmh at Wellington Airport, 91km in Kelburn, 95kmh on the Rimutaka Hill Rd, and 111kmh on Mt Kaukau.
