I've been playing around with the arduino stuff for a while. The Arduino compatible modules have come down in price markedly over the last 6 months and compare favourably with Adafruit.
I switch my water heater and main computer at Port Robinson over the internet. The parts to build the units were about $40 and now are less than $20.
