‘Cyclonic’ storm hammering NSW set to get worse before it gets better

A flood evacuation warning has been issued for areas adjacent to Manly Lagoon on Sydney's northern beaches with the deadly storm lashing much of coastal NSW set to hit peak ferocity overnight.

Residents in the area have been told to prepare to leave their homes should the NSW State Emergency Service issue an evacuation order due to an overflow threat from Manly Dam.

Hundreds of homes in the city's north could be at risk if the dam overflows during high tide at 10.27pm and emergency services have spent much of the night door-knocking homes that are considered a flood threat.

The storm will peak at about midnight, after which the weather will begin to calm down, MetraWeather told 9news.com.au.

Update:

New South Wales authorities say they are dealing with the largest storm operation in a decade.

Wind gusts up to 100km/h are expected today

• Up to 200,000 homes and businesses are still without power and crews are responding to reports of more than 6000 hazards

• The SES has received more than 7900 requests for assistance and performed 90 rescues;

• A number of schools remain closed today

• Twelve buildings have collapsed, at least 85 are trees down and there have been 51 reports of wires down

The town of Dungog has been cut off by floodwater as roads and bridges were washed away, power was down and mobile phone and landlines were unresponsive.

THE tiny town of Dungog, an hour’s drive north of Newcastle, was last night reeling in grief after three elderly residents perished in their homes in the rising floodwaters

The flooding hit so hard and so fast that four houses were washed completely off their footings as the rain-swollen Paterson River peaked at 16.1m — 14m higher than normal.

Emergency services established an overnight evacuation centre in Dungog for residents who had been forced to flee their homes after 350mm of rain fell in 24 hours.

Dungog councillor Glenn Wall, a resident for more than 25 years, said he had never seen such catastrophic weather: “It is far worse than 2007. Overnight and during the early hours of the morning was just amazing.

“I live on the Allyn River and I’ve never seen it rise as fast. By the time I got on to my father-in-law on the other side of the river to say he might want to think about getting his pump out it was too late.
