Webcam Ideas
« on: March 30, 2015, 12:45:02 PM »
Hi

I'm thinking of moving to an IP based Webcam. Just wondering if anyone has a similar setup and can recommend a brand/model. I'd go external if I can, but would also look at internal

Cheers, Andrew

Hi Andrew,

We have just put up a Hikvision model:DS 2CD2332.1 that is ipv6. It has a 2.8mm lense which gives you a wide angle , kind of fisheye, in retrospect  the 4 mm would have looked more natural.
good camera but WDL can not find it.
we have it running on our LAN and are trying many different ways to link it to WDL.
any ideas on how to do it would be appreciated.
we had USB cam which works , but it was not an outdoor cam and not such good quality.
we are on RBI with a dynamic IP and the router does not support port forwarding.
however we can upload images via webcam xp but WDL will not display them
nothing wrong with camera, price about $200, got it on trade me.
we are running it POE and we got a $20 POE injector

cheers don

I also have a Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I and still figuring out how and where to install.  Some great reviews and discussion here http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=23310.0 and http://www.wxforum.net/index.php?topic=24799.0

I bought a couple of 'nobrand' IP cameras from China a couple of years ago - but like kaihoka I have been unable to get one to talk to WD. I've still got one in it's box if you want to accept the challenge :)

I have gone down a different track now and I'm pretty sure I have figured out how to set up a GoPro as a weathercam, will keep progress updated here if I am successful. I will be happy if it does work as all the other cameras are a little on the large side to be going up the top of my mast.

I also have a couple of these coming that I helped to give a kickstart, should be here in a month or two. Not sure where I am going to put them yet.

I Had my eye on one of these:

FOSCAM IP CAMERA HD 1.3MP Waterproof WiFi FI9805W

but the Hikvision looks ok. will have to compare the specs etc. Why is the hikvision so hard to get to work with WD? Surely it puts a file somewhere on the network that you can point WD at? Or is it not that simple?

I have it running through this other program [webcam xp] on the LAN ok and the inbuilt software in the camera that you view in a browser, but having trouble with WD to recognize it.Have tried many combo's with it's IP all to no avail so far.Hmmm.. haven't given up just yet lol. One would think it should be simple haha.

Hmm - so the problem is with the Webcam.exe in WD recognising the device (and thereby not being able to set up the webcam thru WD) or that WD can't pick up the image that the webcam xp program creates somewhere on the LAN (ie it will work, with WD FTP the file up to the site, just not directly through WD)?

If an image is stored anywhere on a LAN, then WD can find it and use it.  I am doing just that with my camera (an Olympus 4MPxl Digicam in the garage on an other PC).  I just map to the drive on that XP machine and pick up the image in wdwebcamcapture program.  It is supposed to pick up an IP camera as well.

Hmm...regardless of the program ie webcam xp 5 program,WD should be able to find the camera using the capture setup i would have thought.
we uploaded  web cam xp capture file to to web files on our site.
we tried to copy into index file , like we had done with our usb  web cam file[ which does work] but it does not display it on our page.
just shows shows a broken window

It looks a few people have HikVision webcams - where did you purchase them from?

There's a couple of links in one of the threads above, but read the post because it's important who you order them from at the amazon shop

Amazon.com : Hikvision DS-2CD2032-I Outdoor HD 3MP IP Bullet Security Camera 4mm : Camera & Photo

Amazon.com At a Glance: NetView

and the link to the post (refer to pg3):

A WIFI camera will require power and an IP camera with PoE (power over Ethernet) will require an Ethernet cable - which may be easier to run yourself.  You can run an Ethernet cable up to 100 metres and you can buy Ethernet cables with the connectors up to 50 metres that I have seen.  Like others in this thread, I too have a Hikvision which I bought in from China....although Hikvision have clamped down on importing English versions from China.  I have not checked of late to see if you can still get them.

How high up the pole do you want to put a camera?  One of the tricky things to do is get the camera lined up correctly - I had to make sure I was not invading neighbours privacy and it is hard to ensure you are not getting sloping images...unfortunately mine is on a slight slope and I need to work out how to fix it.  You can view it here - http://www.worldsouroyster.com/WD/rrcamera.jpg

Hi

As Choc-a-holic has said, you still need some way of getting power to it.  Last time I looked around I found a solar webcam that was wireless, used for security purposes. I seem to remember that it was expensive and I couldn't figure out if it was just motion activated or not (would seem sensible for a security camera with a constrained power supply, to do that!)

You can pretty much guarantee if it is outside it will require some maintenance. My last one I just put inside an external light housing and attached it to the house. (There is a post on here somewhere with instructions on how to do it) My current one just lives inside, and  I have just pointed it out the window, because the drop from the roof to the ground is horrific and I'm too chicken to mount it properly outside! It's not perfect but it is better than nothing, and I can power it easily ;-)
