Discuss the current or recent weather in your region or elsewhere for this week 14th September to the 20th September 2014.
You do not need a weather station, just look out your window and tell us what is going on above you.

 Opotiki - Broomstick Report

Very different so far compared with yesterday.
The lake has gone Yeeha! In fact if you missed yesterday & woke today, you wouldn't have a clue, at my place at least.
A few small bits of debris & a bit of grass hanging off the fence are the only clues.
I hear the Waioeka Gorge suffered another slip, so traffic will no doubt be affected by delays.
To the west, I'm guessing there will probably be some flooding on roads in the Wainui, Kutarere, & Nukuhou/Waimana areas, so take care people. The local emergency response people (volunteer fireman) had quite a busy day yesterday so they'll be a bit tired!!

Opotiki

Thought I would compare yesterdays rainfall with the previous 10 years (2004 - 2013) data from Niwa's climate database.
In broad terms, we got about 1.6 times the normal monthly average in about 16 hours.

Yesterday 144.6   mm

September Totals
Max   154.5   mm   2009
Min      41.5   mm   2011
Avg     88.0   mm   Last 10 Years

Highest Max Daily    63.5   mm   25/09/2009

All months
Max   333.8   mm    May 2010
Min        6.2   mm    Jan 2013
Avg   112.2   mm    Last 10 Years

When I moved back here early 2010, there were 2 occasions of torrential downpours in May & June. Flood levels in the garage were 12" & 18" & the lake hung around for days.
The maximum daily fall in May was 112.0 mm 25/05/10 & soon after we had 118 mm 02/06/10.
The later half of May was particularly wet with all but 11mm odd falling after the 13th & it carried over in to June.
Total fall for June that year was 286.

What I remember most:
The street outside was awash, drains unable to cope, torrents streaming off the road & neighbours properties, underside of 4wd getting a wash, trying to rig a light at night to see what the flock I was doing in raising everything off the garage floor.

These are the joys of living in small town NZ. A town that is pretty much built on top of a swamp, between 2 rivers, with a history of floods over the years. Add to that, the desire of developers & council to gradually fill in the natural run off areas & waterways, & install tiny little drain grates to let surface water drain away, very slowly. Also, our outdated storm & sewer system that is even affected by a high tide. (oops, starting to rant.)

Thank heavens for stop banks & risers on the drains to stop sewage floating off.

Ok, lunch? or a beer? Tough one!!
