VDSL speeds
« on: August 26, 2014, 06:26:22 PM »
Hi,

We had a bit of a discussion in the shoutbox a few weeks back over VDSL speeds.
Our new City dwelling was connected to VDSL through Vodafone and I commented that  I could get a download speed of 40mbps directly connected to the modem with RJ45, but only 30mbps on my Compaq I7 Pavilion G6 through wireless. Most internet boards blame the Hauwei Vodafone modem saying it's crap.
I went on to Ebay and purchased an EDUP 2.4/5.8G 300mbps Dual band USB adapter for $15 landed which I've just installed. Running a speed test the speedo just hit 40mbps, so it's the built-in adapter in the laptop that's the brake pedal in this case.

{Edit on 27/8/14} I've just run it again this morning and I got 49.4mbps download. They are just laying the UFB cables at the gate today, but why would one want to change with those speeds?

cheers
TC

I'm so envious!
I really hope our street does get fibre later in the year as we were told.

Here are our current speeds from Howick, Auckland

I actually find the download speed faster using VPN although I have yet to figure out why.

This one is a test with my PC logged on the internet through a Singapore Server :)

That's roughly what I get under ADSL2+. We are too far from the exchange for VDSL, so will skip that option and go directly to fibre when it comes by in the next year. Even if we could get VDSL I don't think it would make too much difference to my life. Can happily stream HD videos on the current speed, but would expect to get a better response / quality when fibre arrives. Just can't justify the additional cost vs value for VDSL at this point
Cheers, Andrew

I'm looking forward to fibre since I'll be able to stream 4K quality videos without buffering!
We can watch 1080p quality ok though which is reasonably good.

Yep - agree, although HD on Netflix with Dolby Digital isn't too bad. You need to be running it through the windows 8.1 new desktop app to get it - streams in lower quality via the normal browser

Also need to convince the other half that a 4k tellie is a good investment!

I enquired a couple of months ago about getting VDSL, they told me it was available to me and I would get a speed increase but not a huge increase.
I signed up to the new deal where they said they would connect me to the fastest available service, now they tell me VDSL is not available as it would give me a slower speed AND the new modem they sent me is giving me about 20% slower speeds than I used to have.  >:(

and "service" in the way of returning calls/emails at my ISP is now non existent, think it's time to ditch them.

As far as the cost difference between ADSL and VDSL, I guess we were lucky as we were moving house and signed up to a Vodafone package that included Phone/Broadband and Sky. ADSL was only about $10 a month cheaper and we got a further discount for already having a Cellphone account with them.
There is a T/Com box just down the road and we are in Christchurch City, but the speed differences does seem a bit strange.  As I said in the first message, the type of wireless adapter built in to your device if you are measuring the speed through that does make a difference. I've attached details about the one I purchased. It's certainly improved on the one built into my laptop.
I installed a VPN over the weekend and the speeds drop back to under 20mbps download in most countries except the USA (around 30mbps). London is the slowest at under 10mbps. I guess it depends on the VPN provider and their server loads. I'm trying a months worth with PIA ($6.95 per month or $38 a year). No free trial unfortunately. PIA (privateinternetaccess) are reputably one of the fastest service and it was very easy to install on Win7.

The UFB cables have just been laid at the gate and we probably wouldn't have got VDSL if we applied now. I don't think there would be a great cost/benefit advantage upgrading at this point.

cheers
TC
