« on: July 22, 2014, 11:06:28 AM »
ubAlert:

TAIPEI -- The National Meteorological Center issued a forecast on Monday stating that typhoon Matmo is bearing down on Taiwan and is likely to make landfall on Tuesday evening. The storm is heading northwest toward the island at a speed of 20-25 kph. It will affect the coastal regions of mainland China after moving across Taiwan. On Monday night, the center issued a blue alert and warned of downpours and gales in the aforementioned areas.

Another typhoon is threatening parts of Asia this week, bringing dangerous conditions to the island of Taiwan and mainland China.

Typhoon Matmo formed on July 17 over the southern Philippine Sea, making it the tenth tropical depression of the Northwestern Pacific Ocean this season.

On Monday, Matmo was producing maximum sustained winds of 130 km/h with gusts near 157 km/h making it a Category 1 on the Saffir Simpson scale, used to measure hurricane strength in North America. The Joint Typhoon Warning Center is forecasting some strengthening as the storm moves over warmer water.
The typhoon is moving northwestward at 20 km/h and producing waves of roughly eight metres.

The Central Weather Bureau of Taiwan issued a typhoon warning as the storm is expected to pass directly over the island as a Category 2 by Tuesday.

Matmo made landfall along the east coast of Taiwan Tuesday night, local time, with winds over 100 mph - 160km , AccuWeather reported.

Heavy rain fell across Lanyu Township, just east of the main island of Taiwan into Tuesday evening. Rainfall of 10-12 inches was reported. Thats 254mm to 304.8mm.

Matmo should then hit the Chinese mainland on Wednesday afternoon or evening, far east of Rammasun's path.

No Damage reports available as yet.

Typhoon Matmo has made landfall in southern China, the second major storm to hit the country in a week.

Winds gusted to 108 kilometers per hour as it swept over heavily populated Fujian province on Wednesday.

Matmo passed over Taiwan earlier, where it brought torrential rains and strong winds.

No serious damage was reported in Taiwan, though one farmer was killed and a tourist was reported missing after being swept to sea.

Warnings of flash floods and land slides forced the closure of financial markets and most schools and government offices in Taiwan.

The storm's arrival comes as the death toll in southern China from last week's Typhoon Rammasun increased to 56, with 20 more people missing.

Rammasun, the strongest storm to hit the region in 40 years, also killed nearly 100 people in the Philippines and at least 11 in Vietnam.
