Several major traffic arteries were closed throughout the country Thursday morning, including parts of the tunnel road between the Israeli capital and Hebron.

Stretches of the Dead Sea road were closed, along with intermittent closures of Jerusalem-bound lanes on Route 1 between Latrun and Jerusalem.

Temperatures are expected to be several degrees colder than usual for the rest of the week and dropping each day.

Snow is expected later in the week in areas of northern Israel and the Galilee, as well as in high elevations in central Israel.
Schools were closed in the capital and environs.

More than 4,000 people rescued from vehicles since Thursday night.

An unprecedented winter storm — bringing the heaviest December snows on record to Jerusalem — continued to batter the country for a third day.

The main arteries leading in to and out of Jerusalem closed off after thousands of people were left stranded in cars and buses overnight Thursday-Friday by the heavy snowfall.

Crews worked throughout the night and into the morning to rescue travelers in cars and buses trapped on the roads, at one point putting out a public call for help from anybody with a 4X4 vehicle.
