BREAKING NEWS: A Christchurch supermarket has been suddenly closed after engineering reports revealed the need for urgent earthquake repairs.
Countdown Northwood announced this evening that the supermarket had been immediately closed to enable urgent strengthening of part of the Northwood Supa Centa.
Countdown managing director Dave Chambers said the supermarket had receiving engineering reports late this afternoon indicating that urgent strengthening work was needed.
The company had decided to close the store immediately to be "absolutely certain'' that the store was safe, he said.
"We acknowledge that this will be an inconvenience but the safety of our customers and team is our first priority and we will not compromise that.''
Chambers said the supermarket would work closely with its landlord during the repair process, which could take "a number of days''.
Supermarket staff would be given work at other stores in the area, he said.
