Niwa makes a mistake with chch october avg temp
« on: November 06, 2013, 08:34:56 PM »
Their is a mistake in the NIWA October summary RE chch avg month air temp.
NIWA say the normal October temp is 11.4c when in fact its 11.8c.
Octobers 2013 avg temp was 11.9c and NIWA say this was 0.5c warmer than normal but in fact it was 0.2c warmer than normal.

You can check this from NIWA to see I am right.

You are wrong. They are referring to Ch'ch Aero, which does have a mean of 11.4C - 12.2C is for the Gardens. So Ch'ch like almost all other places, was warmer than average in October. All eastern areas were warmer than average in October. The summary quite clearly cites the Aero, whihc it always does in those reports. For more detail, wait until the full stats. report comes out.

PS - you should go to CliFLo directly for fully described data, not those undocumented tables!

One of the problems I have is that 2013 October summary says that chch aero avg is 11.4c.
But in 2008 summary it says October avg is 11.7c for aero. So we now cooler than in 2008?.

As to the above table( "The summary quite clearly cites the Aero, whihc it always does in those reports.") I thought the same as it just says Christchurch.
Not very clear info then.

It doesn't just say Christchurch. There's a suffix - "a" through "f" for each of the 6 centres in the main centre temperature table, and there's an "e" next to Ch'ch. If you look at the footnote, it says Ch'ch Airport.

A little surprisingly, the October mean for the prior 30-year period is higher at the Aero with 11.7C, though the 11.4 is rounded down from about close to 11.45 and the 11.7C for the older mean may have been rounded up. The overall mean at the airport for the entire year is about the same for the 2 periods (1971-2000 and 1981-2010).

Just me on this again.

NIWA say the normal October temp is 11.7c in years...
2004,2005,2006,2007,2008 ,2009,2010,2011 on their summary
But from 2012 the October avg changes to 11.4c. and they all say reading from the airport.
All using 1971-2000 they say.

Any one know why the change down in the avg temp?.

Here a copy of the 2011 summary so you can see when the avg was 11.7c
https://www.niwa.co.nz/sites/niwa.co.nz/files/climate_summary_october2011.pdf

And heres an 2013 summary when NIWA say the avg is 11.4c
