Heavy rain for the South Island West Coast from northwest Nelson to Fiordland including the Alps. Severe northwest gales about Canterbury, Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa. Also heavy rain for the Tararua Range

A low deepening west of Fiordland is moving quickly southeast. An active front will move east over much of the South Island today, then become slow moving about northwest Nelson and Buller tonight, before progressing eastwards Friday morning.

A moist north to northwest flow ahead of this front will is now delivering heavy rain to the South Island West Coast and Alps, with significant spillover into the Canterbury Headwaters. Total accumulations of around 200mm are expected about the Westland Ranges between Otira and Haast, and about Buller. The wettest place is likely to be northwest Nelson where up to 250mm rain is forecast. These are significant and intense falls, especially for Buller and northwest Nelson. People are advised to be wary of rapidly rising rivers, surface flooding, and slips in vulnerable areas. The Tararua range has now been added to the warning with 150-200mm rain expected by midday Friday.

Gale northwesterlies are expected to affect eastern and central parts of the South Island, and also Wellington and Wairarapa. Northwesterlies are expected to become severe for a time about Canterbury today, with gusts 140km/h about inland areas, then about Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa from Thursday evening through to about midday Friday. Winds of this strength have the potential to bring down trees, powerlines and make driving conditions hazardous.
