From the Metservice:A front is expected to lie slow moving over the upper South Island Tuesday as a low moves slowly east towards the country. Cold rain is expected in the east of the South Island behind the front, and snow is expected to affect higher parts of Canterbury and Marlborough on Tuesday and early Wednesday. There is a high confidence that snow accumulations may reach warning amounts about Canterbury (north of about Methven) and southern Marlborough above 400 metres, with a high confidence of heavy rain below 400 metres Wednesday morning and afternoon. For further details please refer to the current Severe Weather Watch.
The low should cross central New Zealand during Wednesday, and rain is expected to spread to most of the North Island, with gale southerlies about Wellington and south Wairarapa, and gale westerlies about Northland. There is a moderate confidence that the southerlies could reach severe gale about Wellington on Wednesday, but a low confidence that gale westerlies about Northland could reach severe gale.
From weatherwatch.co.nz:
This week will be dominated by a low pressure system that forms out in the Tasman Sea today, moves onto central New Zealand tomorrow then off to the east on Wednesday. This will likely bring rain or showers to most places for a time and even some snow about higher altitudes in Canterbury and Marlborough. As the low clears away on Wednesday a ridge then moves onto the country so this will be a time for orchardists to take note of the potential rost risk.
Starting today, a southwest change moves through the lower South Island this morning bringing a period of showers, however they will ease back by midday. Expect high cloud about the upper South Island, southerlies develop about Canterbury in the afternoon with some rain developing first about the foothills then spreading to the coast. Rain will hang around on the West Coast for much of the day (especially North Westland) but will ease at night.
