A front moves over the South Island today and is preceded by strong northerly quarter winds, heavy rain falls on the West Coast. For the North Island conditions are still fairly settled under a ridge of high pressure, some cloud is likely south of Taranaki in the west.

Auckland & Northland
Sunny with some cloud, light west to southwest winds.
Highs: 18-19

Bay Of Plenty, Waikato & Central North Island
Sunny spells and some cloud about the Waikato and Central North Island with light westerly breezes. Sunny about the Bay Of Plenty with light winds tending northerly in the afternoon.
Highs: 19-21

Eastern North Island
Sunny with northeasterly breezes on the coast, just inland expect lighter winds and warmer temperatures.
Highs: 18-23

Western North Island
Cloudy spells with sunny breaks at times, northwesterly breezes.
Highs: 17-20

Wellington
Cloudy areas with gusty northerly winds, strong in the afternoon.
Highs: 15-16

Nelson
Sunny with high cloud, northerly winds picking up a little by midday. Cloud skies later in the evening.
High: 18

Marlborough
Sunny with some high cloud, northerly winds become gusty in the afternoon and strong by evening.
Highs: 22-23

Canterbury
Sunny with thickening high cloud, gusty northwesterly winds inland spread to the coast around midday. A few spots of rain later in the evening with winds easing overnight.
Highs: 19-21

West Coast
Cloudy with rain developing early afternoon and becoming heavy later in the evening. Northerly winds increase.
High: 15

Coastal Otago
Thick high cloud with gusty northerlies, some rain develops late afternoon as winds change light southerly. Rain clears at night.
Highs: 18-19

Central Otago
Cloudy with rain developing around midday, winds become strong from the north late morning then ease in the evening as rain clears.
Highs: 15-18

Southland
Thick high cloud with gusty northerlies, winds change westerly around midday with some rain which clears by evening. Skies then becoming clear.
Highs: 15-16

A slow-moving ridge of high pressure lies over the North Island. A frontal system moves onto the South Island later this morning, then makes only slow progress up the island, reaching Greymouth late tonight.
