ISSUED BY MetService AT 10:49am 23-Sep-2013
URGENT - IMMEDIATE BROADCAST IN: Northland, Coromandel Peninsula,
Gisborne, Auckland
HEAVY RAIN AND SEVERE GALE SOUTHEASTERLIES FOR NORTHLAND, AUCKLAND,
COROMANDEL PENINSULA AND GISBORNE TUESDAY AND EARLY WEDNESDAY.
A deep subtropical low approaching from the north is expected to lie
near Cape Reinga Tuesday night, then move southeast to lie near East
Cape by midnight Wednesday. This low and associated fronts are
forecast to bring rain and gale southeasterlies to northern and
central New Zealand.
The heaviest falls of rain are likely in eastern Northland,
Coromandel Peninsula and Gisborne during Tuesday afternoon and
evening. Expect 100mm of rain in these areas, but 150mm in the ranges
of Gisborne through to early Wednesday morning. People are advised
that rivers and streams will rise rapidly, and slips and localised
surface flooding are likely.
In addition, gale southeasterlies are expected to rise to severe gale
in Northland, Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula during Tuesday
afternoon through to midnight Tuesday, with damaging gusts of 130
km/h in Auckland and Coromandel Peninsula. Winds of this strength are
likely to bring down trees and powerlines, may cause damage to
insecure structures, and make driving hazrdous, especially for
motorcycles and high sided vehicles.
