wild night and day in Reefton too.
pity that i'm in Dunedin.
but power went out at 3am and came on around 8am - caused by intense lightning storm.
will find out more when I get back home tomorrow, but apparently one of the best ever.
50mm of rain recorded so far and it's still hosing down apparently.

Warm over night with a low of 14.0°C Overcast but no rainfall.
Wind picked up after midnight but irrelevant compared to down south with our highest Gust 54km/hr
I sure hope it blows out to sea before getting anywhere near Hawkes Bay.

Well! That was a night
Running on the generator at the moment having lost power at 1am this morning. Strongest gust recorded on the station was 105.5kmh at 1.31am. The power outage is quite widespread with all of Cheviot included.
It's been raining with thunderstorms (12.6mm since midnight), however the sun is out at the moment with the temperature at 15.6°. Average speed of the wind is 11-13kmh right now.

A cloudy day for Howick, but it's more of a bright cloudiness rather than grey. Warm 19°C, with a NW wind.

There's been a couple of weird wind readings this afternoon from my station which don't add up (like 105.5km) wind gusts. I've been running on a standby generator for periods of the day, but turning it off at times to save fuel as we may be without power for a number of days and I don't have a lot in reserve. I'm wondering whether there might be spikes giving false readings. Any wind strength over 40kmh after 8am can be ignored. The 1.30am record gust was genuine.

Severe gales are tonight slamming parts of eastern and central New Zealand with power cuts, trees down as we head into
Thursday the 12th
.
It will be a sleepless night for many as the gales work their way northward into the North Island.
Many of our Backyard stations are off line as I write this at 12.40am. These are mainly stations on the east coast of both Islands.
The New Zealand Police are warning the public to stay OFF the roads ......... further info from last night here:

Fine sunny morning. Some high cloud, mainly out to sea. Still a strong wind blowing which has switched to W - SW. Strongest gust in the last hour was 68.5km (7.50am) from SW. No rain since midnight.
Electricity still out for the whole Cheviot area.
