The atmosphere over the upper North Island is relatively unstable today. A weak front near East Cape this morning is forecast to move northwest across Bay of Plenty to reach Coromandel Peninsula this afternoon, then over the outer Hauraki Gulf tonight to lie just east of Northland by midnight. A few heavy showers are expected to accompany this front, some of which may turn thundery over the sea. These could move onshore from later this afternoon, resulting in a low risk of storms for eastern Coromandel this afternoon and evening, then for coastal places from the outer Hauraki Gulf up to Whangarei tonight (including Great Barrier Island). Any thunderstorms in these areas will bring localised heavy rain, especially in eastern parts of Coromandel Peninsula in the onshore easterly flow.

For Northland, northern Auckland and western parts of Waikato and Waitomo, a few showers are likely to develop this afternoon, triggered by onshore breezes and daytime heating over the land. Any showers that do form are expected to be slow moving, one or two of which could be heavy, with a low risk of one or two thunderstorms in western parts of Waikato and Waitomo. If any thunderstorms do eventuate, they will bring localised heavy rain.
