An easterly airflow lies over the North Island today while northeasterlies push over the South Island. Northern and eastern parts of the North Island can expect rain or showers at times while in the South Island eastern areas should expect drizzle, a front will deliver some rain to Fiordland and perhaps other southern areas later in the day.

Showers with south to southwest winds.
Highs: 16-17

Auckland
Morning rain eases to the odd shower, dry spells at times with southeasterly winds. About the Coromandel particularly in the east rain may be heavy at times during the day.

Bay Of Plenty
Rain, possibly heavy at first about western Bay Of Plenty. Gusty easterly winds.

Waikato
Occasional areas of rain with brisk easterly winds.

Central North Island
Cloudy with the odd shower, breezy easterly winds.

Eastern North Island

Sunny spells and high cloud, high cloud gradually thickens in the afternoon. The odd spot of rain may develop in the evening.

Sunny with high cloud, northeast breezes. High cloud thickens in the afternoon then a few showers move in late evening.

A large low should remain slow moving over the north of the country during Saturday, then drift slowly eastwards on Sunday. The low is expected to direct a moist east to southeast flow over the North Island, bringing rain to eastern regions with some heavy falls in the ranges.

The heaviest rain is expected in the ranges of Gisborne north of the City where a heavy rain warning is current.

In the remaining area of Gisborne south of the City, rain accumulations could also approach warning criteria and a Watch for heavy rain will be maintained.

Additionally, this Watch covers the possibility that strong southeasterlies in the Bay of Plenty east of Whakatane could approach severe gale strength in exposed places from this morning until early afternoon.
