A low over the north Tasman Sea is expected to approach the country during Friday then move onto northern New Zealand on Saturday. Rain in a strong northeasterly flow is expected to be heavy for a time about northern and eastern regions of the North Island and upper South Island, while a period of northeast gales are likely over the North Island.

Warnings and Watches have already been issued with respect to the weather associated with the approaching low. More details about these can be found at: http://www.metservice.com/warnings/home

In Northland and Auckland on Saturday, any heavy rain is likely to ease but there remains a residual low risk of significant heavy rain in these regions during the morning. For the Coromandel Peninsula, western Bay of Plenty,Gisborne and Hawkes Bay north of about Hastings there is moderate confidence that heavy rain will reach warning amounts on Saturday and Sunday. For Hawkes Bay south of Hastings, Wairarapa, eastern areas of Marlborough and also Nelson, there is low confidence that rainfall accumulations could reach warning levels from Saturday to Sunday.
