A very strong southerly flow over the North Island bringing rain to eastern parts should ease during today as a ridge over the South Island builds and spreads onto central New Zealand.

Heavy rain currently falling in the Wairoa District, especially in the hills north of Wairoa, is expected to ease late this morning (Thursday).

In addition, strong and gusty southeasterlies are expected in eastern Bay of Plenty today. This Watch is for the possibility that southeasterlies may rise to severe gale at times until midday today (Thursday).
