14 degrees, Sun has vanished. Wind has a SW slant but around 25km/hr. A little light drizzle, on and off. May as well be a July day!

Update 11.40am
A storm ripping through Wellington has brought down power lines, blown over trees and forced yachts from their moorings.

This morning the Wellington region woke to driving rain and strong southeasterly winds with gusts up to 93kmh.

“Severe weather warnings for Wellington are expected to remain in place until at least this evening.

The storm has also caused significant damage in Taranaki.

LATEST DEVELOPMENTS

A firefighter suffered back injuries after a branch hit her shoulder during an incident in Wainuiomata.

Four classrooms have been flooded in the junior block at Fernlea School in Wainuiomata. A reporter at the scene said it appeared the drains could not cope with the amount of rain.

A tree fell onto a road in Wainuiomata, Wellington, bringing powerlines down and causing a car to crash into it, but the driver escaped unscathed, police said.

The Fire Service as been called to reports of flooding at Fernlea School in Wainuiomata.

There is surface flooding around several streets in Wainuiomata.

A tree has also fallen in Ngaio Gorge Road and a yacht has broken its mooring at the Clyde Quay Marina in Wellington.

The exit to Block Road from State Highway 2 is closed due to flooding.

Passengers flying in and out of Wellington could also face delays after several flights were cancelled this morning.

Damage seems to be mainly out east. Didn't notice anything very unusual so far in city or in the west.

The Stuff page has been updated with some pictures as well:

A weather bomb wreaked havoc in the North Island this morning, sparking evacuations, ripping trees from their roots and roofs off houses.

Have you been affected by the weather bomb? Send your comments and photos to newstips@stuff.co.nz

Taranaki has taken the full brunt of the storm, with one farmer estimating the damage on his property alone to be in the millions.

Patea residents said the weather bomb felt like a twister, with one adding that it was "50 times worse" than Cyclone Bola, which caused wide-spread destruction when it ripped through the East Coast in 1988.

The extent of damage in Hawera, in Taranaki, is so severe that police said it looked like a bomb site.

The weather bomb tore through Taranaki early this morning and is now making its way to Hawkes Bay and Gisborne, MetService forecaster Allister Gorman said.

"Severe weather warnings are in place from Auckland down to Marlborough but the winds in most places will begin to ease in the next few hours," he said.

"But some of the winds will remain at warning levels until at least this evening, especially around Wellington."

Despite the wild weather, emergency services have only heard of one injury.

A female firefighter from the Wainuiomata Volunteer Fire Brigade injured her back after a branch fell and hit her on the shoulder.

Wainuiomata resident Paul Collins said a fireman was cutting branches off a tree that had ``split'' and was leaning on his house when the incident happened about 10am.

Meanwhile, five teenagers who spent a miserable night in the bush near Tauranga after becoming lost yesterday evening were found this morning.

Power is out to about 30,000 properties in South Taranaki and Whanganui and more power outages are expected as the storm moves across the country, a Powerco spokesperson said.

It could take up to five days before all power has been restored.

In Patea, about 30 roofs had been damaged and powerlines littered the roads, Patea community board member David Honeyfield said.

One Taranaki resident said trampolines had been picked up and thrown "like giant Frisbees".

Some people in Patea were forced to leave their homes, and have been offered shelter at the Patea fire station.

There are also reports of extensive damage in Waverley.

NZ conditions this afternoon
Posted by wwadmin on Sat, 03/03/2012 - 13:42
As the worst of the weather slowly leaves our shores, we've recieved numerous comments, updates and reports up and down the country on our facebook page and this is how it's shaping up.

Barb De Long posted "Wasn't too bad here in Motueka, suns out now but Mt Arther and Richmond Ranges covered in Snow!!".

In Tauranga, Nikki Retuhai commented "Sunshine wind. .showers every now and then. . cool day thou."

Auckland has had a bit of everything and Leanne Mehi posted this afternoon with "A fair bit of sunshine in West Auckland - in between squally showers and sudden gusts of wind, that is"

Further south and Cantabrians have felt the cold stuff today... " Black, blowing and rain in Christchurch. Temperature a balmy 12 degrees" wrote Ellen Hoy.

The wind has obviously been a talking point overnight and today and Michelle commented with"Blowing a gale in Stratford... wet and very very cold.... so not nice!"

Windy conditions are expected to ease for those who are currently affected but in some cases it may take some time yet.
