Report from Weatherwatch.co.nz @2.15am

"OK, so here's what we know for sure; winds have already picked up a lot in various NI places. Stratford and  South Taranaki are both reporting strong winds. We've also received a report on our website of 120km/h winds on Manukau Heads.

Over the next few hours, the strong winds will spread across the rest of the North Island. Given the pressure falls I am seeing, I think we are still on track to see some severe gales, especially about the lower NI and upper SI. But, as we've already seen this morning, those severe gales may extend all the way up to Auckland.

Rain will be heavy at times in some places. One band should be moving through Pirongia, Te Awamutu and Otorohanga over the next hour. Heavier rains will also continue around Palmerston North, the Hutt Valley and Wellington...as well as the upper SI."

a rough night in New Plymouth. caused the house to shake numerous times. The house overlooks the port and is in the first line of houses, so is very exposed. Port Taranaki recorded gusts of 60 knots, so 100km/hr, with the strongest wind between 2am and 3am.

it's all much calmer now, with gusts around 50km/hr.

Sun may peep out later...the wind wasn't very noticeable at my location but South Taranaki may have had a fair walloping, as there are reports of of power outages and emergency call outs re roofs etc.
The highest recorded gust for Cape Egmont was 115.5 km/hr .

Anyway, the wind has shifted around - cold at 11.2 degrees. Not much rain from this event.

Looking down at the sea- it looks busy!

From stuff @9.00am

http://www.stuff.co.nz/national/6516598/Weather-bomb-causes-havoc-in-North-Island

LATEST: The wild weather which lashed the North Island overnight has caused havoc, ripping off roofs and bringing trees and powerlines down.

There are reports of weather-related incidents from Auckland to Wellington, but the central North Island has so far experienced the worst of what MetService described yesterday as a "weather bomb".

---- Have you been affected by the weather bomb? Send your comments and photos to newstips@stuff.co.nz -------

Trees have been ripped out of the ground, powerlines have fallen down, roofs have being torn off and windows smashed as a result of the storm.

Patea and Waverly in Taranaki have taken the full brunt of the storm, with trees and powerlines blocking parts of State Highway 3.

Trees have littered a 100 metre stretch of road at Manawapou Hill, on SH3 in South Taranaki, with traffic backed up for five kilometres, police said.

There have been no reports of injuries.

Waverly, Taita and Hawera took a battering from about 4am this morning, but the "peak" of the bad weather has now moved south and is hovering around Whanganui, fire central communications shift manager David Meikle said.

"There is major wind damage in South Taranaki, from Manaia South to Whanganui," Meikle said.

Gales were expected to reach 140kmh in Taranaki today and 120kmh in surrounding areas.

Those in Patea who need it can take shelter at the Patea Fire Station, police said.

Meanwhile, emergency services in Auckland, the upper North Island and Wellington have also been kept busy dealing with weather-related incidents.

As a result of high winds, multiple powerlines had fallen and caught on fire in Oropi Rd, Greerton.

Traffic in the area would be delayed while the Fire Service cleared the scene.

A tree fell onto a road in Wainuiomata, Wellington, bringing powerlines down and causing a car to crash into it, but the driver escaped unscathed, police said.

A tree has also fallen in Ngaio Gorge Road and a yacht has broken its mooring at the Clyde Quay Marina in Wellington.

In Auckland, a horse float is tipping in the wind at the Rosehill BP near Drury, with emergency workers struggling to free the horse on board.

Multiple trees have also been blown over as a result of the wind, causing disruption to traffic across the Bay of Plenty.

Police are urging motorists to avoid travelling if at all possible, as emergency services are currently facing delays in getting to all areas affected by the storm.
Cheers, Andrew

Napier 0900: So far - so good. Wind is still freshening slowly, and its just starting to spit with rain. Still sunny overhead, but very heavy and ominous-looking cloud out to the west. Current 10min avg wind speed is 19kph, best gust still 43.5kph, and temp is 17.3 C. Pressure now down to 980.5mb, and still falling very slowly.

New Plymouth: total rainfall since event= 27mm for me, 29mm for Regional Council station closest to me.

Sun came out for a few minutes whilst I was looking around the garden. Wind was strong enough to knock many grapefruit onto the ground.
