Drought duration - dry spell length
« on: April 28, 2013, 08:43:20 AM »
I am curious how long the dry spell was across NZ in Feb and March.
My own station recorded 32 days without rain, and I wonder how other places compared specifically for this?
Three stations posted in the "new station records" thread, but I would surprised if it was only these three stations (Reefton, Bishopdale & Hawkes Bay) that broke this particular record over that period.

Also, is there anyway to obtain records from NIWA sites for the same without tediously going through each site individually?

..

I broke my record, got 16 days without any precipitation.
A more impressive figure to me is that we got 4mm in a 39 day period
Not to mention the amazingly low 53mm in the first 3 months of the year  :o

Probably not ... in times past the longest dry spell cited for a NZ station was over 60 days, can't remember the exact number, in Jan-March 1939 at a station in the Marlborough Sounds. Can't find any reference to it now at the NIWA or MetService websites - they may have dropped it. Perhaps the record was questionable.

Edit - found it at NIWA - didn't scroll down far enough!  :-[

71 days at Wai-Iti, Marlborough, starting 8 February 1939.
