The monthly figures for February are now posted on my website, and a gloomy February it was, too. It was a mostly cloudy month, where summer made a brief attempt to reappear around the 17th to 21st, then fizzled as cloudy conditions returned. The average maximum temp was markedly low, and average minimums were down a little, also. Rainfall was pretty much normal for the month, but was scattered in dribs and drabs over no less than 13 raindays! Not surprisingly, sunshine hours were very low, at only 56% of normal.

Is your sun % of norm. is based on your previous years of recording?

Record low summer sun here of 534.2 hours, 3.0 lower than the previous record from 1952-53 (a cool damp cloudy summer for a large portion of the country with a lot of easterlies, which was prefixed with a wet easterly November).

February here had 147.5 hours - only a tad better than 145 in 2004 (leap) and 140 in 1953 (non-leap). I think Blenheim's tally may be a record low for February.

Edit: Blenheim's total, if correct, is almost unbelieveable - a paltry 137.7 hours. This from a site with an average of 227 and record high of 298! Previous low was 160 in 1938. Don't think the grapes would be liking that at all.

Aero "official" value is 150 - Ch'ch long-term average (1949-present) is 190, average for last 30 years is 195. Record low is only 112. As I commented before, Blenheim's 138 if correct is a far worse, almost unbelieveable , amount relative to a mean of 227. Gisborne only had about 155, but not a record low. Record NZ low is just 70!

I cannot post my station figures yet as I'm on holiday, but I had a quick look at NIWA's for Reefton which shows a cloudy, but warm month.
The average daily max temp was 25.1°C which is a full 2.0°C warmer than the long-term average.
Sunshine hours recorded were a paltry 137.2. It seems the site has only been recording sunshine hour since 2007, but the previous low was 168.7.

seems we bucked the trend a wee bit in terms of temps, but certainly not for sunshine.
