Shark attack at Muriwai
By Amelia Wade
UPDATED2:09 PM Wednesday Feb 27, 2013

A shark has attacked a swimmer at Muriwai this afternoon.

Two helicopters and two Surf Lifesaving inflatable rescue boats are currently attempting to rescue the person.

Police are taking control of the scene. It is understood the attack happened about 20 minutes ago.

Copied from the NZ Herald,
Evidentially the body is lying on the beach and the police are trying to shoot the shark.  4 gunshots have been heard so far,  Heard on Newstalk ZB
Thought I would put this on - just in case anyone was intending going swimming there today - until the all clear comes over.

very small waves/swell today on the west coast
and the water is warm at the moment (ie like  22C)
i.e ideal conditions for sharks to come closer to shore
