Today & weekend good for most

Most of the country is set for settled skies today and throughout the weekend with temperatures a tad above average.

Northern and eastern parts of the North Island have certainly had a dry spell recently and a few showers might pepper these regions today and parts of the weekend making it the exception to the rest of the nation.
"These showers will often be few and far between and you'd be pretty unlucky to see a number of them fall over one spot this weekend" says Weather Analyst Philip Duncan."There's no doubt it's been dry but it's unlikely that these showers will result in rain guages overflowing" he says.

Easterly quarter winds will affect northern and eastern areas of both islands over the next few days and could be quite breezy at times.

There's also a chance of cloud build ups over inland areas of both islands either today or the weekend which could produce a shower here or there which might be heavy.

"Rain is needed badly over Canterbury and much of Otago" says weather analyst Richard Green" but it's not looking likely over the next week or possibly two sadly. The good news though is that it seems the nor' westers have tapered away for a time " he says.

WeatherWatch.co.nz sees the end of January and the beginning of February continuing a similar pattern of what much of the country has experienced over the last couple of weeks or more.

Hottest conditions this coming weekend seem to be across inland areas and also western districts with temperatures sitting quite nicely even well into the evenings.

Next week still sees a similar picture with much of the country remaining dry with warm to very warm temperatures but still cloud and some showers could persist over the far northeast of the North Island with easterlies hanging in there.

This coming weekend is looking great weather wise for all of us really, well.... nearly all of us.

An anticyclone with its centre just east of the country will cover New Zealand on Saturday and Sunday. The top spots to be with the sunniest skies and lightest winds will be western parts of both islands, Central Otago and Southland. Most other places look good too although east to northeast breezes may be a little brisk in eastern coastal areas.

Once one ventures up towards Gisborne and then into Northland the easterly airflow riding around the anticyclone will deliver cloudy areas and maybe even the odd light shower at times to these regions. Winds will be quite brisk even strong at times from the east about Northland too particularly on Sunday.

Temperatures in the South Island on Saturday and Sunday could get towards the early 30’s for parts of Central Otago, perhaps late 20’s in Southland. Elsewhere can look forward to low to mid 20 high’s. In the North Island high’s in the mid 20’s seem likely for most. Wellington, Hawkes Bay and Gisborne may only get to 22 or 23 degrees however.

So that is how your weekend is shaping up. Have a great one.

Anniversary Day weather
« Reply #3 on: January 26, 2013, 01:02:29 AM »
Aucklanders and Northlanders looking forward to Anniversary Day on Monday can expect mostly dry skies with just a chance of a shower in the far north

The good news is that temperatures will remain mostly mild to warm throughout the day and western parts of Auckland city and also beaches on the West Coast should be a little better off than eastern areas.

The Coromandel could see a decent easterly whip up with cloudy areas and the risk of a shower.Sunshine though is also in the mix.

Weather conditions in Auckland today, the weekend and much of next week appear to be mostly dry with some sunshine and cloudy areas however the odd shower in the north could move through.
Northland sees more of a chance of a shower on Monday for Anniversary Day as well but temperatures are likely to remain in the mid twenties.

Nelsonians the following week can expect a good looking public holiday with sea breezes and mostly blue skies in order.Temperatures are likely to be in the low to mid twenties in sheltered areas away from the breeze.Inland areas could be a couple of degrees warmer than the coast.

UV Index readings and fire risks remain high to very high for northern regions celebrating an Anniversary Day on Monday with peak burn times between 9.30am and 5pm.

WeatherWatch.co.nz reinforces the message to slip, slop, slap and wrap if outside for extended periods.
