Weather may affect Wellington airport Monday + fire risks for eastern NZ

Bad weather disrupting flights at Wellington airport isn't expected to clear until Tuesday.

Today most domestic flights in and out of Wellington airport have been either delayed or cancelled as a result of poor weather conditions.

WeatherWatch.co.nz head analyst Philip Duncan says a cooler southerly is predicted to come on Tuesday which will clear the low lying cloud and fog currently covering the airport.

Monday has similar risks to Sunday with humid northerlies, low cloud and a 40% chance of drizzle or showers.

Mr Duncan says there's a high chance of rain on Tuesday but it will be an improvement for flying conditions with sunnier weather returning from Wednesday.

The week ahead looks 'spring-like' again with windy conditions returning at the end of the working week and fluctuating temperatures between hot days and cooler ones.   The week ahead looks cooler across New Zealand than last week.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says the fire risk is extreme in a number of eastern areas, in particular Canterbury.

"With these very windy, hot, conditions people should be thinking twice about discarding cigarettes and the lighting of any naked flame outdoors.  This is a very dangerous summer when it comes to fire risks due to the hot weather combining with windy, mostly dry conditions" says Mr Duncan.

Gosh - you would not wish this weather on anyone and the high fire risk.

Airport disruption is not likely to continue into tomorrow. Would need to be less wind.
