Sunday will be mainly hot and mainly dry for the NI

High pressure will continue to keep much of the North Island hot and dry on Sunday.  That doesn’t mean the entire island will be rain-free.

Pockets of unstable air will be scattered about the island tomorrow.  That may help a few showers to bubble up.  The best chances for that will be from Taranaki to Wellington and Wairarapa in the morning.  The a few showers will be possible about Wellington, Wairarapa and Hawke’s Bay during the afternoon.

By evening, the daytime heating may help to develop some showers for the eastern Waikato, western Bay of Plenty and Gisborne.  Showers will still be possible about Hawke’s Bay as well.

None of these chances for precipitation are particularly good, but with all the little pockets of instability tomorrow, combined with a frontal boundary, combined with strong daytime heating…they can’t be ruled out.

Speaking of daytime heating…

Highs tomorrow on the NI should be about 2 to 5 degrees warmer than what was seen today from Northland through to the Waikato.  So look for highs very close to 30.  Temperatures should be about the same are maybe just a little warmer in the east.  So highs will likely be at or slightly over 30.  Some slightly cooler daytime highs are expected on the lower part of the island.

Another burst of heavy rain for SI West Coast Sunday 13th
« Reply #1 on: January 12, 2013, 11:41:01 PM »
A very active front, preceded by warm moist air and strong northwest winds, is expected to move onto Fiordland early Sunday morning, up the South Island West Coast during Sunday, and weaken over central New Zealand Sunday night.

Heavy rainfall warnings have been issued for the Fiordland and Westland ranges and for spill over in the headwaters of Otago and Canterbury.

This watch is for the possiblility that rainfall amounts in Southland and Otago may become significant for a time given the recent rainfalls there, but likely won't approach warning criteria.

Significant rain may occur in Southland between midnight tonight and dawn on Sunday, and in Otago from before dawn until about mid Sunday morning. In addition, rainfall amounts may approach warning criteria in a brief burst over the northwest Nelson ranges and the Tararua Range in the latter part of Sunday. Note, a brief burst of heavy thundery rain may occur over the northwest Nelson and Tararua ranges this Saturday evening.

Members of the public in these areas are urged to keep up to date with the latest weather information in case further warnings are necessary.
