A front moves over the upper South Island today and onto the lower North Island overnight. Westerlies cover the country so the weather is mostly wet on the South Island’s West Coast and dry out east, in the North Island dry weather out east also, in the west it is mainly dry however some rain develops in the southwestern corner later in the evening.
Upper North Island
Northwesterly breezes, cloudy areas with some sun at times, winds tending more northeast about Gisborne.
HIGHS: 26-28
Lower North Island
Northwesterly breezes with mostly cloudy skies in the west, sunny out east with some high cloud. Winds may tend more northeasterly about Hawkes Bay. Later in the evening showers develop from Taranaki through to Wellington.
HIGHS: 22-24 in the West, 27-30 in the east
Upper South Island
Rain on the West Coast with heavy thundery falls easing later in the afternoon, rain spreading into Nelson and the Marlborough Sounds, coastal Marlborough may see rain spread from the west at times then clearing at night. Mostly sunny in Canterbury today with any morning rain clearing, breezy northwesterly winds however.
HIGHS: 18-19 on the West Coast. 20 for Nelson, 24-27 in Canterbury and Marlborough
Lower South Island
Rain on the West Coast with gusty northwesterlies, gusty northwesterlies out east also however dry with some cloud especially in Southland.
HIGHS: 20-23
