Win 8 64bit port setup issues
« on: November 26, 2012, 09:44:40 PM »
I've just installed Win8 64bit on my PC (yes I know - Life on the bleeding edge isn't always fun)

I’m having huge problems trying to get the right USB to Serial port software to run from SI Labs. I’ve tried the one on the davis site, but get a message saying that I’m missing the CP210xMaunfacturing.dll. When I look at the SI Labs site it looks to me like the driver version is now up to v6.6 (http://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/Pages/USBtoUARTBridgeVCPDrivers.aspx) – they make mention that the CP210xMaunfacturing.dll change for version 6.0, however when I try and run the install I get a message saying that the install file is not supported in this language (or something similar). SI Labs say that v6.0 runs with Win 8 64bit

The closest I have got to getting it working is doing a manual install of the comport. Davis's weatherlink software will at least pause when doing a port scan, and look at the assigned port, but then gives up and moves on.

Anyone done this before, and got it to work - or at least run the v6.x SI Lab drivers on another spec machine and can confirm I'm using the right ones?

Any advice or helpful shoulder appreciated! Thanks

Cheers, Andrew

Thanks Brian

It was a 32bit Vista --> 32bit Win8  --> 64bit Win 8 upgrade.

Although many of the files stayed in place, most of the Windows stuff got munched in the 64bit upgrade. I also can't see the drivers installed so I would assume that they got overwritten as well

Curiously enough everything worked fine after the 32 bit win8 upgrade, presumably using the same version drivers as I was using for 32bit Vista

The problem seems to be with the driver installation. Unless I manually drop the drivers in there (in which case I'm not sure if they are 32 bit or 64 bit drivers, possibly the former), I can't get anything on the box

Can you confirm I'm looking at the right driver download and version from silabs? Would be good to know if someone had it working on a 64bit system with those drivers

I do know from other reports that you need to make sure to completly un install first
(not always easy)

Well what do you know. I installed the port back in again and it said it was installed on COM3, but wasn't working properly. I left it for a few hours, and came back to it tonight, finding that magically a COM4 port was installed and ready to go. Bizarre I know, but I now have WD up and running again.

Just wish I knew what fixed it tho!

maybe a gremlin hit it with a bigger hammer?

or maybe it just needed to be left to finish auto installing drivers?

I have found that sometime driver can be hard to find for Windows 8, I have also found that Windows 7 drives can work sometimes.

I have Windows 8 working on my work station, weather station, and the media center in the living room

I had no issues instilling Cumulus onto Windows 8.
