Image bandwidth
« on: November 26, 2012, 03:58:56 PM »
Not sure if in correct area to post this.

In the last 6 months my bandwidth usage has gone from 4gb to 6gb per month and increasing. I have noticed that my image files are consuming a lot more bandwidth. Over 1gb for PNG and 600mb JPG, 260mb GIF and 530mb for Javascript files.

What are other user stats for there websites?

Thanks

Time to start crunching your graphics / checking your code !

eg. your title 'banner' .png
286 kB (292,861 bytes)
2,211px × 425px (scaled to 798px × 155px)

This something we have perhaps become guilty of forgetting or not caring about as the 'web' has become faster.

... but in reallity we should be dumping all clever stuff and animations because it chews up bandwith usage for all the latest boys toys !
Imagine what you will KNOW tomorrow

Thanks for the reminder Betel.
Something I was taught a while ago.
Dont use banners in signatures on any forum.
Every time the page loads and your banner loads it downloads your banner graphic from your server.
If you have replied a few times on a page then thats double the drainage.

Manga your banner is really cool. One of my favourites but yes a big drain grabbing from your server.

Hmm ...
Picking up on one of your other images .... it also is displayed at half the original dimensions.

http://www.mangawhaiweather.co.nz/tides/low_150.jpg
114.17 kB (116,913 bytes)
302px × 302px (scaled to 150px × 150px)

Here's the same thing first of all resized to the presented 150 x 150px, then crunched (as a png) - weighs in at under 7kb
