Skies starting to change, Guy Fawkes could be a target
« Reply #1 on: November 02, 2012, 08:31:59 PM »
It's been a fairly dry and settled week for many of us on the whole but today and the weekend is starting to take a turn.

Guy Fawkes events could be affected if they're going to be staged before the official day on Monday.

A front is set to sweep north over the country during the weekend and Saturday appears to where it has the most impact.

It's not all doom and gloom because not everywhere will be wet at all at once but most places will receive a decent dollop or two for a short time.

"The timing isn't great for this weekend with so many outdoor activities planned but some places could dodge a bullet whereas other places just might have to suck it up" says weather analyst Richard Green." It looks like there's a band of rain sweeping across most areas during the day on Saturday but fingers crossed that some of the rain will have moved through before the fireworks get underway at night".

Auckland could see some rain develop late in the morning but hopefully improve by evening and Wellington should be mostly dry but cool and breezy.

Christchurch is expecting some rain and a southerly in the morning but it appears this should be gone by nightfall and Dunedin could see the odd shower however nothing too major.

For those prepared to wait it out until Monday night it might be drier over the north compared to Saturday night but eastern parts of the South Island could be chilly with the chance of some showers with another southerly blowing.

Looking into the crystal ball and early next week remains unsettled for quite a number of regions but it appears to be shortlived which is in contrast to how it was shaping up just a couple of days ago.

At one stage it seemed the North Island was in for a prolonged dousing next week as a depression appeared to cling onto the northern half of the North Island but head weather analyst Philip Duncan says things have changed." An anticyclone is now coming into the picture and it's looking quite stubborn. Its presence will be strong enough to keep out potential trouble makers at this point".

Today seems to be a windy one for inland areas with the MetService giving out warnings to inland parts of the South Island and rainfall warnings to the far sou' west corner.

WeatherWatch.co.nz believes these events will take place but out of the way of heavily populated regions.

Warnings issued
« Reply #2 on: November 02, 2012, 08:34:50 PM »
Big winds are set to blast southern areas overnight and the Government Forecaster has put some warnings in place

Severe north-westerly gales are predicted to develop overnight and last through most of tomorrow and Emergency Management Southland is urging residents and businesses in inland Southland to check all property is secure.

“Take your outdoor furniture inside and check for loose roofing iron or tiles,” Manager Neil Cruickshank said. “Met Service says the gales could bring gusts of up to 130km/hr, which have the potential to damage trees and insecure structure, bring down power lines, and make outdoor activities hazardous.”

It was also a good idea for householders to check that they had torches and spare batteries, and a battery-powered radio in case of power cuts.

“If the gales develop at the strength MetService is forecasting, it will be dangerous to be outside with flying debris in the air and trees or branches falling across roads. Be prepared to delay travel plans on Friday morning if the winds are still dangerous.”

Mr Cruickshank said his staff had alerted Tour of Southland organisers to the severe weather warning.

The forecast for Fiordland is predicting intense rain from today until tomorrow night with 200-250mm of rain likely. The most intense falls are forecast for tomorrow, with rates of 20-30mm/hour.

WeatherWatch sees the potential for very blustery conditions for a time however most of the biggest gusts should occur in mostly remote places.

Cold southwesterlies on the way
« Reply #3 on: November 02, 2012, 08:35:21 PM »
Overnight tonight and during tomorrow cold southwesterlies will spread over the country and temperatures will fall, this in stark contrast to today’s high temperatures especially in eastern regions of both Islands. The high today being in Wairoa, northern Hawkes Bay with 28 degrees.

To start however the eastern North Island will have some mild weather before southwesterlies freshen in the afternoon, Gisborne may cling on to warm temperatures till evening when the cold southwesterlies finally move in there.

This cold front will deliver some snow to the ranges in the South Island tomorrow down to 500 perhaps 400 metres from Canterbury southwards, some snow in the ranges of Marlborough also to 600m later in the day however only for a brief time.

Anyone managing to get out and light fireworks in the evening tomorrow will likely require a warm jersey and a rain jacket wouldn't go a miss either.
