Port Robinson, North Canterbury 8.15am
Fine, clam and sunny with just a few clouds at the moment. The southerly is on it's way so I guess this will be short lived. Temperature 11.3° after a low of 7.8°. Forecast high is supposed to be 15° so it will be a race to see which gets here first (southerly or temperature high). No rain overnight.

Westerlies ease across western regions of the North Island this afternoon, there may be one or two remaining morning showers however they will clear and sunny breaks develop. Mostly sunny on the east coast with northwesterly breezes strong about Wairarapa in the morning, winds tend southerly later in the evening with some cloud. Southerlies develop in the Wairarapa late afternoon bringing cloud and showers. High cloud approaches Northland in the evening with rain possible in the far north later at night.
Gusty northwesterlies for Wellington in the morning with some high cloud, winds change southerly mid afternoon with rain.
Rain on the West Coast of the South Island clears in the afternoon south of Hokitika then further north at night, westerlies. Sunny areas and some cloud in Nelson, northwesterlies change southwesterly late afternoon. A few brief showers possible with the wind change otherwise remaining dry.
Northwesterlies for Marlborough in the morning with some high cloud, a southerly change in the afternoon brings cloud and showers which clear at night. Rain and some snow to 600m in Canterbury eases during the afternoon and clears by evening near the coast, a few further heavier showers may continue in North Canterbury however about the foothills and ranges clearing at night, southwesterly breezes. Cloudy areas in Southland and Otago with southwesterlies, the odd shower and snow flurry to 500m about but dry spells also. Later at night southwesterlies freshen about Southland with slightly more widespread showers.
Temperatures in the high teens or low 20’s today about Northland, Auckland, Waikato and Bay Of Plenty. 22 to 23 degrees for the east coast. High teens elsewhere although only reaching the mid teens in Wellington and about the Central North Island. A high of 15 to 17 degrees about Nelson and Marlborough, low double figure high’s in Canterbury through to Southland, 13 to 14 on the West Coast.

Labour Day afternoon is delivering a big mix of weather conditions up and down the country.
Temperatures have climbed into the 20s over one or two centres across the north east of the nation whereas some inland areas of the South Island have seen thermomemeters plunge to single figures with reports of snow to low levels in Canterbury.
The contrast isn't that uncommon but such cold weather in late October isn't an everyday occurrence.
Holidaymakers heading home have a decent stretch of weather over the upper north. It isn't perfect but in the main it's generally dry whereas the Alpine passes in the south have been providing somewhat of a challenge for drivers.
Tonight temperatures over the Mainland will be cold to very cold before rising a little tomorrow but still a tad on the cool side.
Facebook readers of WeatherWatch.co.nz have been quick to comment today about the variation in weather with Darfield and Methven seeing snow and sleet and lightning and a small tornado appear to have hit a small West Coast town and damaged a couple of outbuildings.
The rest of the week doesn't appear quite so unsettled but recent weather patterns indicate that anything is possible over a short period of time.
