Valid from Monday 10 September 2012 to Thursday 13 September 2012
A strong, cool southwest flow should become established over the country on Monday behind a front preceded by strong northwesterlies. The front should bring periods of heavy rain to western parts of both islands, especially about the ranges. There are currently Severe Weather Warnings and Watches in place for many areas of New Zealand for either heavy rain or severe gale winds.
There is low confidence that rainfall warnings will extend into Monday for the ranges from Waitomo through to Wellington, including across to the Central Plateau. For northwest Marlborough, Nelson and the South Island West Coast, there is low confidence that rainfall warnings will still be in place on Monday.
There is low confidence that a wind warning will be required on Monday from Waitomo through to Wellington, including the Central Plateau. For central Hawkes Bay, Wairarapa, Wellington, also Marlborough and the ranges of North and Mid Canterbury, there is moderate confidence that a wind warning will be in place on Monday and low confidence that they will extend into Tuesday.
For Southland, Otago, South Canterbury and the Canterbury Plains there is moderate confidence that wind warnings will be required on Monday and low confidence that they will extend into Tuesday.
Snow to low levels is likely late Monday and Tuesday for the far south of the South Island and snow accumulations may be significant enough below 500 metres to justify a warning. There is low confidence that a heavy snow warning will be in place for Fiordland late Monday and Tuesday and for Otago and Southland on Tuesday. As the cold air moves north, there is also a possibility that snow accumulation over the central North Island high country may be significant enough below 1000 metres to justify a warning. On Wednesday, there is low confidence for a heavy snow warning for the central plateau and the ranges of Wanganui.
On Wednesday, a large high should move over the North Island and northern South Island bringing a respite from the wind, rain and snow in many places.
On Thursday, a strengthening moist northwest flow becomes established over the South Island as the high moves away to the east. There is moderate confidence that rainfall warnings will be required for the South Island West Coast south of the Glaciers.

Big Tasman high will spark cold snap for SI
« Reply #2 on: September 11, 2012, 12:27:50 AM »
Our first big spring storm will be on its way out over the next 48 hours, taking the heavy rain and thunderstorm threat with it.

What will replace the storm is a big ridge of high pressure that will build in off the Tasman Sea.  That will help establish a very potent southerly flow over the country, bringing some pretty chill air onto the South Island.

The air should be cold enough to send snow levels all the way down to sea level across Southland and Otago.  That means there is a chance for some snow, possibly heavy for the deep south, although significant snow accumulations below 500m aren’t likely.

There will also still be some strong and gusty winds in place, which will make things feel even colder thanks to the wind chill factor.  Highs on Tuesday and Wednesday will likely not make it out of the single digits in the deep south.

Also on Tuesday, sleet could spread north into Canterbury and Marlborough.  Government forecaster MetService says snow should remain above 200m in Canterbury and above 400m in Marlborough.  WeatherWatch.co.nz South Island forecaster Aaron Wilkinson says that he doesn’t see snow causing any issues in Christchurch on Tuesday.

Widespread frosts are likely in central Otago early Wednesday morning.  The rest of the Mainland could see frosts Thursday morning.

MetService is advising that these conditions could put a stress on livestock without shelter and make driving difficult, especially about the higher roads.  They are advising people in the south and east of the South Island to prepare for adverse conditions.

This cool down will also affect the North Island, but should warm significantly.  However, MetService feels there is a small chance for an accumulating snow over the North Island high country below 1000 metres on Wednesday.

Outlook for Tuesday and Wednesday, North Island
« Reply #4 on: September 11, 2012, 12:42:11 AM »
The snow story at 2.30pm outlined the risks of snow potential in the South Island mainly for tomorrow. Overnight tonight and early tomorrow the main front that starts this system off moves over the North Island, the coldest air arrives for the North Island later tomorrow.

The snow risks for the North Island are not as severe but none the less it will be very cold. Winds will be strong to gale force from the west at first about Wellington and Wairarapa tomorrow then showers will develop in the afternoon with strong southwesterlies. Wet weather will clear later on Wednesday, expect snow in the ranges to 600m lowering to 200m overnight tomorrow. 5 to 10cm possible to 600m and 3 to 5cm possible to 200m for this event. A few sleety showers may even make it into the capital overnight Tuesday for a time.

Hawkes Bay will experience a similar weather pattern tomorrow however snow amounts will be less, 3 to 5cm possible to 600m, 1 to 3cm to 400m with only a few flurries making it down to 200m and settling looking unlikely at that level. In the ranges behind Gisborne the pattern is similar once again however even lesser amounts of potential snow, 1 or 2 cm to 800m, barely a few flurries making it to 400m overnight Tuesday.

About the Central North Island ski fields and Mount Taranaki snow will develop to 800m later on Tuesday morning then lowering to 400m in the evening before clearing at night, winds will be strong from the southwest. Expect 5 to 10cm above 800m, 2 to 3cm down to 600m. Only a centimetre or two will make it down to 400m and due to potential wet surface conditions it may not settle at that level.

In the Waikato a few flurries may make it onto the likes of Mount Pirongia and the higher ranges about inland Bay of Plenty on Tuesday but that will be as bad as it gets, in the afternoon then clearing in the evening 1 to 2cm of snow to 800 perhaps 700m. Due to conditions being damp snow may not last for long at those heights or settle at all.

ISSUED BY MetService AT
9:46 am 11-Sep-2012

Snow for the Central North Island and the lower South Island, with heavy falls possible.
A strong southerly airflow is bringing snow to the lower South Island and is expected to spread north affecting the central North Island this afternoon. Snow is already falling to sea level in Fiordland, Southland and Otago and snow is expected to affect the lower North Island this afternoon and evening. In areas of Fiordland, Southland and Otago, snow accumulations of 20 to 30cm are likely during today above 300 metres. For the central North Island ranges of Taihape, the Kaweka Range of Hawkes Bay and northern Manawatu, accumulations of 20 to 25cm are possible above 800 metres from this afternoon through to early Wednesday morning, with the heaviest period of snow expected late this afternoon and evening.
These amounts of snow have the potential to be disruptive by affecting roads and passes, and the weight of accumulated snow could damage trees, powerlines and weak structures.
Also, the combination of the strong winds with the snow or very cold showers will lead to significant wind chill. These conditions could cause distress for livestock without shelter.

HEAVY SNOW WARNING
AREA/S AFFECTED
Fiordland, Southland and Otago
FORECAST
A very cold southerly flow is bringing snow showers down to sea level about Otago, Southland and southern Fiordland during today. In the 12 hours from 9am Tuesday, expect 20 to 30cm of snow to accumulate above 300 metres about the ranges west of Riverton, the Catlins, inland areas of Southland and the southern ranges of Central Otago. Also, 5 to 10cm may accumulate during this period down to 200 metres.
FREEZING LEVEL: 400 metres.
AREA/S AFFECTED
Central North Island ranges from Taihape and the Kaweka Range of Hawkes Bay to northern Manawatu
FORECAST
Showers are expected to turn to snow above 700 metres from late morning and lower to 400 metres this evening. In the 18 hours from 3pm Tuesday, expect about 20cm to accumulate above 800 metres and 5 to 15cm to accumulate down to 600 metres. The heaviest period of snow is expected to be late this afternoon and evening.
FREEZING LEVEL: 1200 metres lowering to 700 metres to this evening.

Tonight and tomorrow, will be cold but system short lived
« Reply #6 on: September 11, 2012, 10:37:33 PM »
Wintry weather will clear away from Southland, Otago, South Canterbury and other inland areas of Canterbury overnight, expect severe frosts in inland areas possibly getting down to –7 or –8 degrees overnight in the likes of Central Otago. Showers becoming restricted to the coast in Canterbury later with snow flurries possible to sea level in Christchurch however mainly settling above 200m especially on Banks Peninsula. Wintry showers about the coast in Canterbury clearing early tomorrow morning.

Expect cold southwesterlies about Wellington tonight, wintry showers with some sleet possible overnight. Some snow to 200m however amounts won’t be large. Areas of precipitation clearing in the afternoon tomorrow. A few snow flurries to 400m in the Hawkes Bay and Gisborne ranges tomorrow however clearing in the afternoon, accumulations will be quite small and may not settle.

A few snow flurries to 500m clearing about the Central North Island tonight as winds tend more southerly. Becoming quite cold. Showers in other areas of the North Island look like clearing tonight, there may be a few stragglers in the morning tomorrow however they will go and sunny breaks will increase with southerly winds easing during the day.

It won’t be terribly warm tomorrow but Thursday is looking rather settled and pleasant for most of the country. Friday cloud will start to develop in the west of the North Island, on the east coasts of both Islands expect mild temperatures returning with a north to northwesterly airflow developing.

Weather Video: Sun to return briefly ahead of weekend rain
« Reply #7 on: September 13, 2012, 03:01:42 AM »
Sunny weather is slowly spreading across the country - but it will be short lived says Philip Duncan in today's nzherald.co.nz weather video.

While some areas still have cold, wintry, conditions today - the sun is moving in and the showers clearing.

Thursday and Friday look settled, sunnier, warmer and drier for just about every region in New Zealand - but on Friday that starts to change on the West Coast - with a large low moving in for Saturday for most places.

Lets end the week on a high
« Reply #8 on: September 13, 2012, 03:13:03 AM »
An anticyclone in the Tasman Sea will move over the North Island tomorrow then off to the northeast on Friday. This will bring settled sunny weather to the North Island. There could be a few brief early showers about Gisborne tomorrow however they will clear. Temperatures will be in the mid teen range, perhaps 13 to 14 along the east coast and about Wellington and 11 to 12 in the Central North Island however.

Friday will be settled also with slightly warmer temperatures for most, northeasterly winds will start to pick up in western areas from afternoon or evening.

Pleasant weather can be expected over the South Island too tomorrow with light winds tending northeast in the east. Westerly winds will pick up about Southland from afternoon however and may be gusty in inland areas at night through into Canterbury. Some cloud will develop on the West Coast with a few showers or drizzle patches in Fiordland from afternoon. Mid teen temperatures tomorrow for most although sitting around 13 to 14 degrees on the West Coast.

Friday will see rain pushing onto the South Island’s West Coast with brisk west to northwest winds, mild weather with high cloud out east. Late in the day a few showers may start to push into Southland.

Friday and the weekend
« Reply #9 on: September 13, 2012, 08:27:10 PM »
Friday is still looking as mentioned yesterday, fine and sunny weather over the North Island with north to northeasterly winds picking up later in the day with some cloud in the west. On the east coast expect sunny skies all day with light winds. Fine out east in the South Island with high cloud and increasing north to northwesterly winds bringing mild temperatures. A few brief showers get into Southland and perhaps Otago later in the day as winds ease. Expect rain on the West Coast.

On Saturday skies will be mostly cloudy over the North Island with brisk northerly winds, rain develops in the west during the morning then clears later in the day as winds change westerly. Fine out east with high cloud and breezy northwesterlies, showers later at night as winds change more southerly. Fine on the east coast of the South Island with high cloud, a southwest change moves through from afternoon in Otago through to Marlborough at night bringing a period of showers. Another period of showers moves up the West Coast also and there could be a few thundery falls in the mix.

On Sunday skies will have sunny areas and some cloud over the North Island with a few showers on the east coast with southerlies. In the afternoon and evening isolated showers may pop up south of Auckland and through many inland areas bringing a risk of thunder. Any morning showers clear in the South Island with sunny breaks then increasing as southwesterlies ease. Perhaps the low risk of an isolated afternoon shower about Marlborough and inland areas of North Canterbury about hills and ranges.
