Cloudy and almost raining - clearing on the horizon and thin in places. The rain has stopped for now but is drizzling close by. 3.1mm since midnight. The winds have been light and WNW all night - since 3pm yesterday but are now heading to the North, dropped to 5km/hr but may be lifting again. The day should improve.

The north end of Paekakariki had SPECTACULAR skies this morning. Dawn cracked with nice big lenticulars in the sky. Shortly after could be seen a line of rare Kelvin Helmholtz clouds travelling from the SW direction, which was probably caused by wind sheer as the weather locally in Paek was coming from the mountains in the E. The sky from the E was black and ominous with holes in it where the sun shone through, very nice effects. Shortly after some large rain squall clouds appeared. The low cloud has lifted from the mountains now and we have a blue sky. Pix of this on my page at

Cupofteacoast - I couldn't see any photos for Sep 4th, but perhaps that is a US host server still operating yesterday date? I saw some Sep 3rd photos in the various libraries though... Power poles yes! HAHA!

Showers over much of the North Island today but dry spells too, a few of those showers may be heavy. Winds will be gusty from the west or southwest. About Bay Of Plenty particularly in the east expect sunny areas and some cloud, remaining mostly dry. Sunny with some cloud in Hawkes Bay and Gisborne with breezy westerlies. Later in the evening another surge of showers will move onto western areas of the North Island with showers possibly heavy and thundery with hail.
Becoming fine and sunny in Otago and Canterbury with southwesterlies easing in the morning, a southwest change moves through Otago just after midday reaching about Christchurch by evening bringing another period of showers possibly heavy at times with some hail. Showers clear late morning near the coast in Marlborough with southwesterlies easing in the afternoon, sunny breaks otherwise. At night southwesterlies develop with a period of showers possibly heavy with hail mainly near the coast.
Expect scattered showers for most of the day along the West Coast with cool southwesterlies, dry spells too with some sun in the mix. Sunny breaks in Southland to start with westerlies, showers by late morning however with some hail as southwesterlies freshen. Winds tend westerly again in the evening in Southland becoming strong.
14 to 15 expected over most of the North Island today, 15 to 16 in the Bay of Plenty and high teen temperatures north of Hawkes Bay on the east coast. 13 to 15 degrees expected north of Westport on the West Coast, about Nelson, Marlborough and Canterbury. 11 to 12 degrees elsewhere in the South Island.

Bit of an unstable day
«

Today we have cold upper air moving over the country in an unstable southwesterly airflow, this means there could well be some thunder and hail about especially in Canterbury later this afternoon and western parts of the North Island this evening.
Isolated heavy showers are already developing along the foothills from Mid Canterbury northwards through to the hills just behind Waipara and thunder has been heard east of Culverden in the last 20 minutes. This could be more of a prelude of things to come however.
The main southwesterly wind change associated with the trough is getting into Otago now with showers and the bulk of the activity will be associated with this change.
Apart from possible excitement later this afternoon it’s been a warm day so far north of Hawkes Bay along the east coast with temperatures in Napier currently on 17.8 degrees which is the highest in the country at present, although the westerly wind there is quite blustery. Showers are peppering the western North Island and West Coast of the South Island, there are long dry breaks in between the showers too giving some relief.
