In Brief
Monday
North Island, rain spreading from the southwest, with some heavy falls, clearing gradually from the west later in the day, although a few showers continue in the southwest. South Island, rain easing in the west and clearing from the far northwest. A few showers in the south, mainly fine through Canterbury.
Tuesday
North Island, Remaining showers clearing in the morning and becoming fine most places. South Island, cloudy in the west, with a few showers in Fiordland, generally fine elsewhere.
Wednesday
A few showers in the far southwest, and some rain developing in Northland. Generally fine elsewhere, with some high cloud.
Chatham Islands
Cloudy periods and strong northwesterlies on Monday. A period of rain Tuesday morning as winds change fresh southwest. A few showers on Wednesday.
In Full
On
Monday
, the front that brought heavy north to northwest rainfall to the South Island west coast on Saturday and Sunday will lie over the northwest of the South Island. The heavy rainfall in the Buller and northwest Nelson areas (see warnings)is expected to wind down Monday morning as the front moves fairly quickly over the North Island. There is a moderate risk of warnable rainfall amounts on Mt Taranaki for the first part of the day and over eastern Bay of Plenty in the second half of Monday. In the high country between these areas, confidence is low for significant rainfall amounts.
High presuure is then expected to give settled conditions to most of the country on Tuesday through Thursday, except in the far north where there are indications that an easterly flow with some rain may develop over Northland.

A wet start to the week

A front will drift from west to east across the country tomorrow, bringing plenty of rain with it.
Nelson and the upper West Coast of the South Island will continue to see rain tonight. Rain could become heavy at times, especially tomorrow morning. Precipitation is expected to move into Marlborough tomorrow as well. The deep south will also likely seem some rain. Canterbury, however, will have a tough time getting much precipitation out of this.
For the North Island, rain will spread into Northland by morning. By the time midday rolls around, much of the North Island will be seeing a good chance for rain, although Hawkes Bay and Gisborne may have to wait until the afternoon.
Heavy rain is possible about Northland, the Bay of Plenty and Taranaki during the morning and afternoon tomorrow.
Wind could also be an issue. Strong nor’westerlies are possible over central New Zealand tomorrow morning.
At this time, government forecaster MetService is continuing their heavy rain warnings for the ranges of Buller and Westland north Otira/Arthurs pass through the overnight. Those warnings will likely be extended through tomorrow morning.

In today's weather video with nzherald.co.nz - Philip Duncan discusses the latest on Tropical Storm Isaac which is now on track to hit New Orleans in less than 48 hours. potentially growing into a Cat2 Hurricane. We have full details on our week ahead here in New Zealand too as a large high starts to move towards us - but first, a few showers to get through.

What to expect for tomorrow and the week ahead

In the North Island it’s looking like there will be a few showers in the morning in western areas then easing off by midday with southwesterly breezes, there may be the odd shower hanging about western coastlines till evening however it should be mostly dry. Sunny breaks will develop in the afternoon. In the east it will be mostly sunny with light winds, a southwest change develops about Wairarapa around midday however moving through to Gisborne by late afternoon or evening. A few of these showers could be heavy with some hail in the mix.
At night skies will clear and it’ll become quite cool in most places as a ridge branching out from an anticyclone in the Tasman Sea moves over, frosts are possible in the Central North Island.
In the South Island it’s looking like a sunny day will be on the cards although not as warm as it has been the last few days in the east, winds will be light. About Southland and Fiordland however expect west to northwesterly winds, cloudy skies and the odd shower at times mainly in Fiordland by midday.
On Wednesday an anticyclone dominates our weather, skies will be mostly sunny however across Southland, Otago, and in Fiordland up through to Hokitika skies will be a bit cloudy with some drizzle or light showers at times as winds tend light southerly. In the evening those areas of precipitation will clear. Thursday is looking like a nice day for most although an area of low pressure this time moves towards Northland from the north, this will bring some cloud for northeastern parts of the North Island and showers north of about Waikato for a time.
By Friday a new northwesterly airflow develops over the South Island and the low north of the country moves off meaning improving weather during the day for the northeast of the North Island, other parts of the North Island will have a nice day.

Approaching low pressure system for the North
«

Since yesterday’s article regarding what to expect for the week ahead a low pressure system forming north of New Zealand today will move closer to the top of the North Island tomorrow and is looking like making more of an impact then initially expected. High cloud will spread over the upper North Island tomorrow, a few showers develop about the tip of Northland in the morning then rain moves in during the afternoon over the rest of the region with strong east to southeasterly winds increasing during the day. Rain may be heavy for a time in Northland especially in the east then easing in the evening.
On Thursday the low moves a little further south and it’s accompanying east to southeasterly airflow which will be strong at times spreads over the whole island by the end of the day, areas of rain north of the Waikato in the morning spread south during the day mainly in the east stopping short of Wairarapa. Large parts of the Central North Island and Waikato will remain mostly dry during this period however there will be a few showers about. East Cape may receive some heavy rain at times from morning then easing at night. Parts of Taranaki especially in the south through to Wellington along the coast will remain dry but there will be high cloud.
On Friday the easterly airflow eases in the morning as the low moves away to the east, rain also clears and conditions will become brighter in the afternoon. Finally a brief settled spell will develop on Saturday as a ridge spreads over the Island however a north to northeasterly airflow develops by the end of the day with increasing cloud.
During this time the South Island is likely to remain relatively unscathed apart from some cloud and the odd shower in the far south tomorrow. Northeasterly breezes are likely to be fairly persistent in the east on Thursday and Friday coming around an anticyclone east of the South Island, those type of northeasterly winds are never too exciting and can be a little chilly as many in Christchurch know. The weekend brings a warmer north to northwesterly airflow however.

Weather Video: Low up north today, spring front this weekend

Philip Duncan and nzherald.co.nz team up to bring you the latest on the weather around NZ. Currently a small low lies just north of NZ while a high spreads over the rest of the country.
However this weekend a front will move up NZ starting on the West Coast on Saturday and reaching the upper and eastern North Island late Sunday or Monday morning.

This pattern means an east to northeasterly airflow gets funnelled over the country, and while it will be sunny in the east of the South Island tomorrow it won’t get as warm as it did today due to cooler winds coming off the sea. The east coast of the North Island will get some increasing cloud tomorrow and showers developing north of Gisborne in the evening.
Our main feature for Thursday is the low north of New Zealand, this will bring rain to Northland and perhaps into Auckland at times. In the Waikato the risk is fairly low of any showers but there may still be one or two make it through. The heaviest rain will be in Northland mainly in the east tomorrow and perhaps eastern parts of Coromandel, then overnight and into Friday morning about northern parts of East Cape.
Amounts are not looking too bad though with 15 to 25mm expected in eastern Northland and perhaps Coromandel, 5 to 10mm about northern East Cape.
Temperatures not overly warm in most main centres tomorrow. The warmest high’s will go to towns from southern Taranaki through to Kapiti along the west coast of the North Island and in Southland in the South Island as those areas will be more sheltered from the east to northeasterly airflow, expect temperatures around 15 perhaps 16 degrees in those places.

Settled in the North Island tomorrow

The North Island will have a settled and mostly sunny day as a ridge takes control of the weather extending out from an anticyclone east of New Zealand, southeasterly winds will tend more east to northeast as the day progresses. In the morning there may be a few showers about Hawkes Bay and Gisborne however they will clear then sunny breaks will increase, there may also be some cloud to start about Northland however it should also clear.
Conditions for fog about the Waikato and Central North Island are good overnight Friday into Saturday, there is a chance it may get into Auckland but it’s a bit touch and go there at this stage.
In the South Island cloud will spread north along the West Coast during the day tomorrow with drizzle in Fiordland from afternoon, northeasterly breezes increase. On the east coast conditions will be mostly sunny with some cloud particularly in the morning, northeasterly breezes will be quite brisk however especially in Canterbury. The spots to be will most likely be Nelson and Southland which should have another cracker of a day with temperatures in the mid teens, a little cloud may drift into Nelson from evening.
Saturday will herald the return of a northwesterly airflow over the South Island, meaning warm temperatures return for the east. On Sunday the warm temperatures should move to the east coast of the North Island also.
