This Week's Weather Forecasting 20th - 24th August 2012
«
on:
August 19, 2012, 07:18:44 PM »
Issued by MetService Sunday 19 Aug 2012
Monday
Northland to Wellington, also Coromandel, Bay of Plenty
and the central North Island high country
Scattered rain, widespread for a time tonight or early tomorrow. Some heavy and thundery falls are possible, especially in the west.
Gisborne to Wairarapa
Scattered rain, clearing early tomorrow, but brief showers tomorrow afternoon and evening.
Marlborough and Nelson to Westland
Rain, turning to showers overnight. Some heavy and possibly thundery falls north of Hokitika.
Canterbury and Otago
Rain developing this evening then easing inland and north of Ashburton tomorrow.
Southland and Fiordland
Cloud increasing, and scattered light rain developing overnight.
Chatham Islands
Cloud increasing, with drizzle tomorrow evening.
Tuesday
North Island, showers in most places, more frequent in the west and south. South Island, showers in the east and south, more frequent in the east, mainly fine from Nelson to Westland.
Wednesday
North Island, showers, slowly clearing from North Taranaki to Bay of Plenty northwards. South Island, showers contracting to Banks Peninsula and the Kaikoura Coast, becoming mostly fine elsewhere.
Thursday
North Island, becoming fine in most places, but still a few showers in Gisborne and Hawkes Bay. South Island, mainly fine, but a few coastal showers in the northeast at first, and morning cloud and fog areas inland.
Friday
North Island, mainly fine. South Island, cloudy periods increasing in the west and far south, and late rain
about the fiords and Stewart Island.
Chatham Islands
Cloudy with some rain or drizzle on Tuesday and Wednesday, and northeasterlies tending southeast. Mostly cloudy with a few drizzle patches on Thursday.
A disturbed southerly flow is expected to affect much of the country during Tuesday as a large low pressure system moves slowly eastwards from over New Zealand. This unsettled situation is expected to bring showers to areas of the North Island, a period of rain to the east of the South Island and cold showers to Southland and Clutha.
There is low confidence of a period of significant heavy rain for Canterbury and the eastern ranges of Marlborough on Tuesday. Although rainfall accumulations may not reach warnable amounts, given the recent heavy rainfall in these areas it is felt that they should be included in a low risk area.
On Wednesday, the southerly flow is expected to weaken as a ridge of high pressure starts to build over southern New Zealand. The ridge is expected to lie over central New Zealand during Thursday.
During Friday, the ridge should move over the North Island, while a northerly flow is expected to strengthen over southern New Zealand.

Time for a spring clean

Tomorrow and Wednesday’s weather will be a few days of clearing out the cobwebs before we move into the long awaited westerly airflow type spring pattern this coming weekend, in between we’ll have an anticyclone that will bring settled weather on Thursday and Friday.
In the North Island expect a mix of sunny areas and some cloud for your Tuesday, showers at times also particularly in the west and south of the island slowly easing during the day. Damp weather will affect most of the South Island also however on the West Coast and about Nelson conditions are expected to be sunny. A few showers may linger just on the coast about Buller however as the southwesterly airflow clings a little closer to the land there.
As the flow turns north to northwesterly this coming weekend we can expect mild conditions on the east coast of the South Island, temperatures in the high teens are possible.

Settled weather on the way 22nd August 2012

We are nearly on the way to some settled weather and some regions will be experiencing it from tomorrow as an anticyclone in the Tasman Sea moves in behind our departing low, however a few places will still be a bit damp.
Mostly sunny in the west of the North Island tomorrow with some cloud about, expect southwesterly breezes tending more southerly by evening. Cooling down at night in the Waikato and Central North Island.
On the east coast of the North Island expect cloudy skies and showers, winds will be breezy from the southwest.
Drizzle clears in Canterbury in the morning then from the Kaikoura Coast in the afternoon, sunny breaks may then show mainly in Canterbury with south to southeasterly winds easing during the day.
The West Coast will experience sunny weather with light winds, although there is a chance of some convergent showers in parts of Buller and Tasman mainly in the afternoon which will ease later in the evening then clear at night.
Sunny areas will increase about Southland and Otago tomorrow with east to northeast breezes.

Philip Duncan and nzherald.co.nz bring you the latest on the weather around NZ today, the rest of the week and this weekend. We also have some fantastic video from Wellington the other night as a severe thunderstorm tracked across Cook Strait and eastern parts of the city.

Anticyclone move nearly complete

The anticyclone moving over the South Island currently will move east overnight and the centre will lie out to the east of New Zealand tomorrow extending a ridge back over both Islands. For the most part the weather will be settled tomorrow however there are a few exceptions.
Some cloud is likely to develop about Fiordland as the flow tends northerly there, there are bound to be areas of cloud about the upper half of the South Island however there will be sunny periods too with light winds. In the North Island the odd shower is likely to pepper the east coast in an easing southeasterly airflow.
There is another interesting feature tomorrow which I am particularly interested in, and is a sign of warmer weather developing.
In the afternoon about Auckland in a line through to the inland ranges of Hawkes Bay and areas northeast of there. A few isolated showers are likely in the afternoon due to heating from the sun and an upper cold pool of air, which is –27 degrees celsius about 5000 metres up in the atmosphere.
There is even the chance of a few thunderstorms with the most likely areas to receive thunder being the inland ranges of Hawkes Bay, eastern Central North Island and southern parts in the Bay of Plenty. It isn't a high risk, only low to moderate but I’ll be keeping a keen eye out to see how the day progresses.

Great weather on the way for the end of the week
«

The weather around New Zealand tomorrow is looking very good with pleasant temperatures for most regions thanks to an anticyclone out to the east of the country extending a ridge back over both islands.
The West Coast of the South Island will be a bit cloudy though with showers moving north along the coast during the day. Also parts of the Central North Island, Waikato, inland Bay of Plenty much like today may receive a few isolated afternoon showers however the risk of thunderstorms forming is fairly low.
Another great day in store for the North Island on Saturday, fog morning and night is possible south of Auckland into the Central North Island. In the South Island it will be wet on the West Coast with a few heavy falls in South Westland as a northerly airflow builds, mild out east with temperatures in the high teens and some high cloud.
Another sunny day about the North Island on Sunday however some high cloud will increase from the west during the day and north to northeasterly winds will increase, in the South Island expect wet weather on the West Coast as a front moves north.
Sunny out east on Sunday in the South Island with some high cloud however a few showers may push off the ranges in the morning for Canterbury and in the afternoon for Marlborough, temperatures once again in the high teens in the afternoon.

Classic spring front coming this weekend
«
Reply #9 on:
August 24, 2012, 12:14:03 AM »
Our early start to spring continues this weekend as the first front from our new weather pattern moves in. The shift in patterns is a significant one, away from the large Tasman Sea lows and back to more highs in the north and bigger lows in the south.
It's these southern lows that will shoot cold fronts into the Tasman Sea - weakening as they head north and east. While these fronts tend to deliver more showers and often more unsettled days the rainfall totals are expected to reduce in many regions predicts WeatherWatch.co.nz.
The front will move into the West Coast of the South Island on Saturday and rain warnings are expected says WeatherWatch.co.nz. The front will be preceded by strong west to north west winds then followed early next week by cooler sou'westers. It's what many forecasters would describe as a classic spring front.
Head weather analyst Philip Duncan says eastern areas will hopefully see more sun and less rain over the coming weeks. "Hawkes Bay and Gisborne have had a very wet year and even this week the rain and showers have continued while many others have seen the sun return".
Mr Duncan says eastern areas of New Zealand are still going to see rain or showers most weeks but the rainfall totals and longevity should reduce. "These big lows we've been having for the past four or five weeks have ensured that northern and eastern areas particularly have received prolonged rain events, often with sub-tropical connections. This new weather pattern makes the rain bands move through much faster with the bulk of the rain likely to fall in western areas".
"Nature often has a way of evening things out and I guess this was Mother Nature hitting the reset button" says Duncan.
While WeatherWatch.co.nz says an early spring has greeted most New Zealanders it's still wintry for some in the Deep South. A heavy frost kicked off the day yesterday says our Invercargill reporter Malcolm Gayfer. "We had a minus six degree frost in Invercargill and minus five degree frost in Gore - a bit late in the season for hefty frosts" he told WeatherWatch.co.nz. The air temperatures were around minus three.
But even for Southland and Otago there are signs of spring in the future forecasts, with warmer westerlies and more days with sun.
"It might sound crazy today but as spring fully develops the recent heavy rains in the east may become only a distant memory" says Mr Duncan. "If El Nino forms, as it's expected to do, that could lock in this dry weather pattern for the east".
WeatherWatch.co.nz is monitoring the various international climate organisations and will bring you the latest on El Nino as soon as we have it.
