Tuesday 31st July 2012 from Weather Watch
« Reply #1 on: July 31, 2012, 12:14:44 AM »
From Weather Watch:
Today there should actually be a spell of dry weather in the North Island with some sun after any early showers clear in central regions, winds will be light from the north. Showers will develop in the morning about Northland however spreading to Auckland in the afternoon then eastern regions later in the evening or at night.
Showers will hang about Taranaki most of the day becoming a little more persistent in the evening with northeasterlies, rain about Wellington and southern parts of Wairarapa eases during the day to clear in the evening.
It will be wet on the east coast of the South Island with rain heavy at times especially in inland areas i.e. the foothills in Canterbury. Showers about the top of the South Island and in Southland possibly clearing late afternoon, mainly in Southland. Snow flurries to 700m later in the day in Canterbury. The West Coast should remain dry with sunny spells and gusty east to southeasterly winds, perhaps a few showers in northern areas of Buller however.

Well, we had a nice warm,  sunny day for much of yesterday, despite the severe weather warning, and I cannot see showers hanging around here all day, today, either!
Currently, blue skies, light SE 6 degrees.

Waitakere

A decent beginning to the day up here, clear to start with but there is a bit of cloud about - don't hold out much hope that this will remain the case for the rest of the day though, expecting it to rain again this afternoon.
Overnight low of 5.9°C currently 6.7°C

Tuesday’s national forecast
« Reply #14 on: July 31, 2012, 06:51:53 PM »
Mostly sunny in the North Island with any early showers clearing in central regions, winds will be light from the north. Showers will develop in the morning about Northland however spreading to Auckland this afternoon then entering parts of the Waikato and Bay of Plenty by evening or at night. Morning rain about Hawkes Bay and Gisborne will clear by midday with sunny breaks then developing, light winds.

Rain about Wellington and southern parts of Wairarapa eases during the day to clear in the evening. Low teen temperatures in the south and mid teen high’s in the north.

It will be wet on the east coast of the South Island with rain heavy at times especially in inland areas i.e. the foothills in Canterbury. East to southeaterly winds will be gusty, snow flurries to 800m later in the day in Canterbury. Showers about the top of the South Island and in Southland clearing in the afternoon or becoming patchy with dry spells, sunny breaks in Nelson for the afternoon look likely. The West Coast should remain dry with sunny spells and gusty east to southeasterly winds, perhaps a few showers at times north of Hokitika however.

Low double figure high’s for most South Island regions today however on the West Coast temperatures will be mild in the afternoon up in the mid teens perhaps a little higher.

Heavy rain in South Canterbury
« Reply #15 on: July 31, 2012, 07:07:43 PM »
The heaviest falls so for from the system pushing into the east coast of the South Island have been in South Canterbury. More specifically around Peel Forest, Geraldine and the ranges behind there.

About Geraldine forest 146mm has fallen since yesterday morning, 143.5mm at Mt Frances and 80mm in Blandswood which is a small settlement near Peel Forest.

Conversely river flows in the area have increased dramatically as well. The Orari River at the gorge has gone from a mere trickle yesterday morning at 3 cubic meters per second rising to 400 cubic meters per second currently which is at it’s peak so far.

The Opihi River at the SH1 bridge has gone from 4 cubic meters per second up to a massive 722 cubic meters per second currently which is at it’s peak also and still climbing.

The rain is definitely heavy in the above areas, hopefully there aren’t to many issues in regards to flooding.

Rain is starting to clear the east coast of the North Island north of Wairarapa at the moment and in Auckland a new round of heavy showers is about to move in, in between many have had a spot of sunshine.
