A windy and showery start up here has turned round to be a beautiful sunny afternoon - pretty clear again in Waitakere and the temperature is back to falling again, it's currently 8.8°C with the prospect of maybe 4°C or so overnight. Baro is rising rapidly with it, 1023.4 hPa now and the current rate of increase is just over 1 hPa/hr

Any morning showers clear about eastern areas of Northland, Auckland through to East Cape, and also about Wellington through to Hawkes Bay in the east with sunny breaks then developing. Sunny areas may develop a little later in the day about Gisborne as the southerly airflow pushes more cloud into this area, showers look to clear in the morning there as well however. Winds will be breezy and cool from the south in the previously mentioned places easing later in the day.
Sunny breaks increasing in all other areas of the North Island with cool southerly winds easing dying out at night with frosts later at night inland. High’s of 12 or 13 degrees about Wellington and along the east coast, in the mid teens north of Auckland. 14 degrees about Taranaki and low double figure high’s for the Central North Island.
Sunny today along the east coast of the South Island with light winds, perhaps dying away from the southwest early in the morning north of Canterbury. Any morning cloud clears in Nelson to a sunny day, light southwesterlies die out there. There will be a little bit of high cloud across Southland and Otago however with breezy west to northwest winds especially on the southern coastline where winds will be gusty, a few showers on the western ranges also of both regions at night.
Sunny breaks increase on the West Coast with southwesterly breezes easing. In Fiordland skies should be cloudy for most of the day with the odd drizzle patch from midday, breezy northwesterlies and more widespread showers from evening.
A high of 13 for Nelson this afternoon, 11 to 12 degrees for the West Coast. 13 to 14 degrees can be expected on the east coast. Low double figure high’s about Central Otago and Southland.

Big wet gives way to high and dry + Chch breaks July heat record (sort of)
«

The big wet across the weekend and the past 24 hours will today be replaced by a high moving in from the Tasman Sea bringing mostly dry weather and more average temperatures to the country for the rest of the week.
Apart from a few showers remaining in coastal extremes such as Southland, Fiordland and East Cape and the Far North the trend for the next five days is mostly dry.
Head weather analyst Philip Duncan says we're now in a new phase of weather. "For the past couple of months our weather was dominated by big highs over Tasmania which then crossed the South Island. It brought a combination of snowy cold snaps and frosty blue sky days. Now we seem to be in more of a westerly pattern which tends to be milder with less cold events".
"The highs are crossing central and northern New Zealand bringing more westerlies to the south and less southerlies to the north".
Last week Philip Duncan said parts of eastern and northern New Zealand would feel "spring like" as the predicted warm winds moved in over the weekend and start of this week.
On Sunday Christchurch reached 22 degrees.
WeatherWatch.co.nz contacted NIWA on Monday who confirmed the temperatures were infact record breaking - at least for the airport weather station.
NIWA says Christchurch Airport recorded a maximum temperature of 22.4C on Sunday. "This is a new July record for the airport" Georgina Griffiths told WeatherWatch.co.nz. "...in records starting 1954 at the airport, the previous July maximum temperature was 21.7C, recorded on 30/7/1998".
However the city itself has been warmer, with Sunday coming in as the second hottest July day on record. "Comparing against all other Christchurch stations in the vicinity, this rates as the 2nd-highest maximum temperature for July, in a number of records starting 1863" Georgina Griffiths told us.
WeatherWatch.co.nz says the settled weather is predicted to linger into the weekend when conditions may start to go down hill in the north thanks to a large but weak area of low pressure which may drift past northern regions. The South Island may also see conditions going down hill in the south and west as the large high departs out to the east.

Waikato rivers flood risk eases faster than expected
«
Reply #11 on:

The flood risk in the Waipa and Lower Waikato rivers has eased overnight after peak river levels came in lower than expected.
Yesterday, Waikato Regional Council warned there was a risk of a once-in-20 years flood event in those waterways, and in west coast catchments, following heavy rain at the weekend and over the course of Monday.
But peak flows in the upper Waipa catchment – around Otorohanga and Te Kuiti – turned out to be less than anticipated last night, meaning less risk of flooding of the Waipa and Lower Waikato catchments as the peak flows move downstream. River levels in west coast catchments have been receding as well. No more significant rainfall is expected this week. So the flood risk forecast has now been lowered to potentially a once-in-five years event.
“This is good news for farmers and residents alongside the Waipa and Lower Waikato rivers, and those living in the west coast catchments,” said duty emergency management officer Greg Ryan.
“However, these rivers will still be swollen over the next few days and people need to exercise caution around them.
“Farmers are advised to continue to monitor water levels and move stock to higher ground if necessary. There could also be inundation of flood plains beside rivers and surface water generally that people need to take into account when travelling.”
“We will continue to monitor the situation closely and update our advice as necessary,” said Mr Ryan.
In Hamilton, residents can expect to see high Waikato River levels in the city ease today as Mighty River Power scales back releases of water from Lake Karapiro. The company yesterday released extra water from the lake to build up storage capacity there in case this was needed to help manage the peak flows coming down the Waipa in coming days. This extra release has now been stopped to help ease pressures on the Lower Waikato as the Waipa peak moves through.
Around Pirognia, the 37 continuous hours of rain flooded some fields and created other minor surface flooding. However, much of that receded very rapidly yesterday afternoon. The squally heavy falls that came through after sunset last night did not cause widespread additional problems..

Becoming more settled
«
Reply #12 on:

Today is looking more simpler if looking at the country from a satellite image, which means it is more settled although there is still a bit of a final southerly flush going on in the North Island which should ease tonight.
The east coast of the South Island and Nelson have clear sunny skies. The West Coast has areas of cloud and there will likely be some drizzle in Fiordland from about now for the rest of the day. Southland has mostly sunny skies also although there is a little bit of cloud on the coast.
Temperatures are warmest on the coast in Otago currently under the influence of a northwesterly airflow, I can see a few 17’s and even the odd 18 in the area, a little cooler in Christchurch today with a northeasterly breeze capping temperatures although that should ease this afternoon. It is a bit warmer inland and in South Canterbury, currently on 16 in Timaru.
The North Island has had some morning showers clear from most places and sunny breaks now increasing, although a few showers are hanging on to Gisborne and Northland this afternoon but they are looking to clear very soon. Winds look to be very gusty from the south in many places, those winds will ease later today. Temperatures are in the mid teens for most although cooler on the east coast, Wellington and about the Central North Island.
