Harsh sub-zero temperatures across NZ - 30th June
« Reply #21 on: June 30, 2012, 12:01:59 PM »
Widespread frosts affected a number of regions overnight as temperatures had a chance to fully drop with the lack of wind and cloud.
As we predicted yesterday inland parts of the lower South Island saw the heaviest frosts.
Temperatures fell to -9 in Twizel, -6 in Lumsden and -5 in Queenstown and Blenheim.  -3 was recorded in Dunedin, Timaru and Christchurch - but felt significantly colder.
It was cold in the north too with Waikato dropping below -3 and one WeatherWatch.co.nz reader said temperatures fell to -5.3 in Owhango, King Country, this morning.
Auckland received frosty conditions across the city too as the skies temporarily cleared overnight.  This morning high cloud from a small disturbance north of New Zealand is limiting the sun's ability to warm the city up following the cold start - and it's a similar story in Northland too.
Not everyone had a frost - some parts of Wellington had 8 degrees and showers/drizzle this morning at 7am and some of this moisture made it over the hills to Paekakariki - stopping frosts from forming there too, despite frosts further up the Kapiti Coast.

Drab day with only a few peeps of sun and a couple of light showers. But will still end up a little ahead of average June sun, a welcome change from the previous 2 Junes.

a great day in Reefton. currently 4.4°C with lots of sun. we maxed out at 5.0°C earlier.
no wind.
in Greymouth for groceries earlier this afternoon and a very cold Easterly wind was terrible. car temp was reading 10°C, but it felt considerably colder than our 4.4°C here.

New Plymouth: nice sunny day, though light SE felt cold! Nothing over 11 degrees, was around 3 degrees this morning. Some high cloud about, so we know what is about to turn up in a day or two. So I mowed the lawns to beat the rain!

High cloud dominated the day in Waitakere, preventing the temperature from rising much at all - sunshine was weak when it shone through.  We made it to a high of 10.4°C from our low of 1.4°C, looked quite cloudy just before but it's already down to 4.9°C, which is 2°C less than the same time yesterday.

Saturday’s national forecast
« Reply #29 on: June 30, 2012, 07:56:37 PM »
Mostly fine and sunny weather for most today, it will be a cold start though with heavy frosts in inland areas of both Islands.

Sunny across most of the North Island however there will be the odd shower and some cloud about the east coast gradually clearing as the day moves on, cool southwesterlies will ease there. And about Northland some high cloud will develop in the afternoon with winds tending easterly.

Clear skies across all of the South Island with light winds, a little cloud about Fiordland later in the day as winds tend northeasterly there.

Temperatures will range from the mid teens about the upper North Island to the high single figures in the lower south.
