Showers continue in Waitakere, the month rain total is creeping upwards - we've had a lot of rain days this month but should end with lower totals than the previous years have been

June 2010 245 mm, 25 rain days
June 2011 161.6 mm 28 rain days
June 2012 (MTD), 111.6 mm 23 rain days (3 days to go)

Today's low was 8.6°C, now 9.3°C with showers totaling 3.4 mm so far

Port Robinson 8.30am
Fine clear morning. Temperature 10.9° after being 11.8° at 6.35am. Wind has shifted from the west round to SSE which accounts for the temperature drop. Strength is around 7kmh. Forecast is to remain fine and I suspect we have reached our temperature high for the day.

Sunny periods today with the odd morning shower mainly for Waitakere.  Reached a high of 14.2°C today and a total of 3.8 mm of rain.
Very windy on the way home, decided to check out Bethells Beach with the dog after work - awesome, the wind was blowing very strongly, surf was just white and boiling as far as you could see, huge amounts of white fluffy foam being blown fast up the beach with the dog going berserk chasing the stuff.

Cold and windy but drier for many this afternoon
« Reply #16 on: June 29, 2012, 12:33:23 AM »
It's not especially warm across New Zealand today, particularly for Dunedin residents who have dealt with gales and even the odd snow flurry over the past 24 hours.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says the bleak Dunedin forecast won't change much for the next 12 to 18 hours but conditions are improving.   Our predicted high for the city today is just 5 degrees, although in the past hour it's crept to 6.

Strong winds from the west-south-west have eased a little from last night and will slowly continue to do so tonight.

Further north in Christchurch winds are more southerly but the city is on 10 degrees.  Our detailed 6 day forecast shows cold conditions for the next 48 hours and overnight lows dropping below zero.

Auckland also has windy conditions with cloudy periods and a few light showers.

Across the country the especially heavy showers from Wednesday have cleared and while a couple of heavier showers still remain 90% of the country is seeing a considerably drier and less dramatic day of weather.

However cold winds are being felt in many areas - but should ease significantly overnight tonight and into Friday right across New Zealand.

WeatherWatch.co.nz says black ice will be a problem again overnight across some South Island roads and the North Island's Central Plateau.

Showers skirt the nation's coastlines
« Reply #17 on: June 29, 2012, 12:46:19 AM »
The skies continue to dry out this evening following a rough 72 hours of squalls, hail and heavy downpours.  As we head into Thursday evening the wind flow across the country is mostly south west - the same angle that much of the nation's shore lines point, which means a lot of the shower activity is now running up the coastlines but for big sections of the country they are well offshore.

With the lower South Island considerably wider than the middle section, it means most showers are missing Canterbury, as the lower South Island shelters areas further north - although Banks Peninsula is getting hit by strong southerlies and showers, with snow expected above 400m.

Showers are also coming into parts of Southland and coastal Otago.

Showers are affecting Wairarapa's coastline but mostly missing Hawkes Bay.

On the West Coast much lighter showers are moving in around Greymouth while mostly light showers are moving into western areas of the North Island, mostly Taranaki, Auckland, Waikato and Northland.

Tomorrow the showers will continue to get smaller, more isolated and few and far between.

Dry weather should be in place for over 95% of the country by the weekend,.
