Beautiful clear start to the day in Waitakere, wet still from 9.4 mm of rain yesterday, and slightly foggy with it. Temperature is still dropping, 8°C at the moment.
Today's forecast is for it to be mostly cloudy with a high of 16°C - not much cloud on the horizon at the moment though.

Showers this afternoon in Waitakere - we've recorded 4.6 mm so far, reasonable during the morning though. For the moment its gone clear and the temperature is dropping 9.1°C at the moment, high was 15.3°C just before 1 pm.
Hoping my forecast is right and that tomorrow's weather is fine...

Thursday's national forecast

Things will be settling down across the country today. That doesn’t necessarily mean a dry day where you are. But the risk for thunder will continue to diminish and rain chances will become harder to find.
For the South Island, expect a settled day for the most part. The upper regions could still see a few showers, but the rest of the island should be dry. Highs today will range from 5-10 across the deep south to the low to mid teens across the central and north.
Most of the North Island will see shower chances throughout the day but as the day wears on, the low responsible for the rain moves further away, and the shower chances diminish. The western and southern coastal regions, including Wellington, Auckland and Northland, will have the best chance for seeing showers today. The rest of the country will have pretty good chances for precipitation this morning with lesser chances this afternoon and this evening.
Temperatures across the North Island today will be around 10 in the south and east to the mid teens about the rest of the island.

It's the shortest day of the year

It’s been a very wintry few weeks for much of New Zealand. Cold and snow more reminiscent of August greeted many Kiwis as we kicked off this month, and we hadn’t even reached the winter solstice.
Until today.
Today is the shortest day of the year with the solstice at 11:09 am. Auckland will have just 9 hours and 38 minutes of daylight today. Wellington will 9 hours and 11 minutes of daylight. Christchurch will have 8 hours and 56 minutes. Invercargill will have just 8 hours 35 minutes.
Of course this also means that the days start getting longer again as of tomorrow.

Facebook readers sound off about today
«
Reply #19 on:
June 21, 2012, 09:49:01 PM »
WeatherWatch’s Facebook readers gave us their view of weather across the country today, and it was quite varied.
Sue Robinson in West Melton said simply, “OMG SUN!!!!!!” Rachel Jennings in Timaru also said she saw lots of sunshine and “almost a clear sky”. Readers in Christchurch like Jessica Parore also said they had a sunny day.
In fact, many places around New Zealand saw a fair amount of sunshine today.
Others, however, saw a lot of clouds and rain. Ann Caldwell in Wellington called today “bleak”. Sara Page in Hutt said it was “cold and showery”. Karen Shaw and Helen Davies both said it was cool and rainy in South Wairarapa.
But Katrina Parker in Palmerston North was happy to get even just a little bit of sun that broke through the clouds.
More unsettled weather is on the way. A series of fronts is due to affect the country over the next several days. Each one will bring with it a chance for more precipitation.
