Forecast in Brief for New Zealand this weekend from the Metservice

Saturday
North Island, occasional showers in the east and about Wellington, snow on the ranges. Mainly fine elsewhere, with frosts south of Auckland. South Island, occasional showers in the east with snow down to 400 or 500 metres, mainly fine and frosty elsewhere, but areas of fog in the south.
Sunday
Remaining showers in the east and about Cook Strait clearing. Otherwise mainly fine, but high cloud increasing in the north and west. Morning frosts in sheltered places.
Monday
Rain spreading to most places. Only scattered falls in Gisborne and Hawkes Bay, and the east and south of the South Island with snow to low levels there.

Stoke up the fires, turn on the heat pumps as this graph does not look too warm.

Video: Your weekend forecast with Phil Duncan
« Reply #2 on: June 15, 2012, 03:15:57 PM »
nzherald.co.nz and head weather analyst Philip Duncan team up to bring you the latest weekend forecast in today's weather video.  Firstly we cover the cold air and where it's moving (away from us!).  At the same time a sub-tropical low is pushing gloomy cold weather over the upper North Island today.

The weekend looks generally settled with conditions easing across southern and eastern parts of New Zealand as a narrow high moves in - ahead of the next front arriving late Sunday/Monday.

We also look at the marine forecast around New Zealand for Saturday in a new regular Friday feature.

Update from Weather Watch - 16th June 2012
« Reply #4 on: June 16, 2012, 11:05:17 AM »
Sunny about Southland and Central Otago with light winds, morning cloud clearing about the Otago coastline to a sunny afternoon as light southerlies die out. Cloud lingering a little longer further north along the east coast with any early showers clearing then sunny breaks developing after midday as cool southwesterlies ease, high single figure temperatures along the east coast. Sunny about the top of the south after any morning showers clear mainly about Marlborough, cool with high’s barely reaching double digits. The place to be is on the West Coast of the South Island today as it has been the last few days with clear sunny skies and high’s around 12 or 13 degrees, light winds. Quite cool morning and night though with light frosts.

Cold about Wellington and the Kapiti Coast with blustery southerlies, rain at first may be heavy then easing to the odd shower clearing by evening. Mostly cloudy with cold southwesterlies along the east coast of the North Island, expect showers possibly heavy and thundery with some hail easing by evening. A mix of sunny spells and some cloud about Taranaki and the Central North Island with breezy southerlies keeping temperatures cool, also the risk of a brief shower in the morning. High’s in former mentioned areas around 8 to 10 degrees. Mostly sunny weather about the Bay of Plenty up through to eastern Northland with light southerlies breezy at times, temperatures around the mid teens for this lot. Morning cloud and a few isolated showers for western Northland clearing to a sunny afternoon.
