NZ weather summary June 1985
« on: May 15, 2012, 09:05:36 AM »
June 1985: It was a mild month with above average rainfall in the east of the North Island, about central New Zealand and in the southwest of the South Island. Northerly winds prevailed over the country, with light winds more frequent than usual. South-westerlies, which usually predominate at this time of year, had exceptionally low frequencies. These conditions resulted from mean sea level pressures being well above average to the east of New Zealand. The Chathams were 10hPa above normal; the 3rd consecutive month of abnormally high pressures.

Rainfall: Rainfall was above average in Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Waikato, Taranaki, Wellington, Nelson, Marlborough and Fiordland. In some of these regions more than 150% of normal was recorded. Locations in these areas include Hamilton Airport (158%), Whakatane (216%), Rotorua (181%), New Plymouth (181%), Kelburn (154%), Masterton (151%) and Haast (187%). Some heavy falls occurred in Waikato & Bay of Plenty on the 14th and 15th, with 77mm at Hamilton Airport on the 14th. In the recently very dry areas of South Canterbury and North Otago, rainfall was generally 80% to 90% of normal. However in areas around Banks Peninsula, rainfall was about 20-25% of normal.

Some totals (mm): Port Fitzroy 298, Waihi 421, Te Puke 351, Kawerau 398, Te Kuiti 268, North Egmont 891, Wainuiomata 295, Stratford Mountain House 866, Rai Valley 255; Ashley Forest 10, Waimate 18, Dunedin 35.

Temperatures: With the predominance of northerlies this month, mean air temperatures over the country were above average by about 1.0C to 1.5C. Both maxima and minima were above normal.

24.5C maximum at Grassmere on the 6th, -8.1C minimum at Lauder on the 3rd.

Sunshine:   Sunshine was below average over much of the country. This was particularly noticeable about the central North Island and the north of the South Island. Stations with large departures exceeding 35 hours included Taupo (-45 hours), Tauranga (-37 hours), Nelson (-58 hrs) and Blenheim (-48 hours). Totals were above average in northern Northland and on the Southland Plain, and near average in the east from Christchurch southwards.

Thanks, RWood.
Looks like that June was a pretty miserable month for many of us!

Moderated significantly by the light winds and warm temperatures - Wellington was pleasanter than the rain and sun stats. would normally suggest. But the very pleasant summer and autumn preceding it helped, no question!

Normally I do too - my impressions usually seem to line up pretty well with the rain & sun stats. In that respect I think I found this month to be something of an anomaly.
