June 1985: It was a mild month with above average rainfall in the east of the North Island, about central New Zealand and in the southwest of the South Island. Northerly winds prevailed over the country, with light winds more frequent than usual. South-westerlies, which usually predominate at this time of year, had exceptionally low frequencies. These conditions resulted from mean sea level pressures being well above average to the east of New Zealand. The Chathams were 10hPa above normal; the 3rd consecutive month of abnormally high pressures.
Rainfall: Rainfall was above average in Bay of Plenty, Gisborne, Waikato, Taranaki, Wellington, Nelson, Marlborough and Fiordland. In some of these regions more than 150% of normal was recorded. Locations in these areas include Hamilton Airport (158%), Whakatane (216%), Rotorua (181%), New Plymouth (181%), Kelburn (154%), Masterton (151%) and Haast (187%). Some heavy falls occurred in Waikato & Bay of Plenty on the 14th and 15th, with 77mm at Hamilton Airport on the 14th. In the recently very dry areas of South Canterbury and North Otago, rainfall was generally 80% to 90% of normal. However in areas around Banks Peninsula, rainfall was about 20-25% of normal.

24.5C maximum at Grassmere on the 6th,
-8.1C minimum at Lauder on the 3rd.
