It was one of the cold years - the only comparable one since was 1992.

Very dry in the east of the North Is, somewhat wetter than usual over most of the SI. Relatively sunny in the north and east of the NI.

One extra point. Their quoted max. of 98.0F at Whakarewarewa looked suspicious, so I checked it out at CliFlo. The highest recorded at the site was 30.9C (i.e. close to 88F). The checking processes took longer in those days, with no modern computers to help. On the other hand, informed "eyeballing" was done better then.
