Thousands of people are without power as high winds slam the Canterbury region this evening.

According to reports on the Orion Group website 4137 homes across Christchurch and Banks Peninsula weer without power as of 5:30pm.

The MetService reports a wind gust of 159km/h was recorded in Banks Peninsula this afternoon.
