Passengers on board a burning ship were forced to jump into the water to escape the flames, police say.

At 3.45pm emergency services received reports of a ferry on fire off the coast of Whakatane.

Live footage of the scene can be watched here.

Police said 57 passengers and 7 crew members were on board the 75-foot tourist vessel, which was on its way back from White Island at the time.
