25 Injured as Typhoon Vongfong Pounds Japan.
« on: October 13, 2014, 01:01:42 AM »
TOKYO—At least 25 people were injured and more than 200,000 were advised to evacuate in Okinawa and southwestern Japan Sunday as typhoon Vongfong brought torrential rain and strong winds to the region, toppling trees, flooding streets, and triggering massive power outage to affect 60,000 homes

Typhoon Vongfong, characterized as strong by the Japan Meteorological Agency, made landfall on Okinawa and brushed past the prefecture during the wee hours local time Sunday. It was bringing maximum sustained winds of 144 kilometers per hour (89 miles an hour), according to the agency.

The typhoon was traveling slowly, about 15 kph (9.6 mph), Sunday morning, and was expected to turn toward the nation’s main islands.

According to the Met Office in Japan, the storm, downgraded from the status of super-typhoon, is expected to reach Kyushu by Monday and would reach the Tokyo area on Tuesday. Authorities have issued warning in the region for landslides, strong winds, and rainstorm related accidents.
