282ft Below Sea Level and 49.4°C hot – Death Valley Weather Station.

The below opened my eyes on the Cumulus Forum, so with permission I thought I would share it. Is there anywhere in NZ below sea level?

This was taken by Mark Crossley from Wimslow, Cheshire, UK when he was on holiday.

Badwater Basin is an endorheic  basin in Death Valley National Park, Death Valley, Inyo County, California, noted as the lowest point in North America, with an elevation of 282 ft (86 m) below sea level. Mount Whitney, the highest point in the contiguous 48 states, is only 84.6 miles (136 km) to the WNW.

Mark said ‘The temperature at the Death Valley visitors centre in Furnace Creek was reading 121 °F (49.4 °C), the car made the temperature at Badwater about 3 or 4 °F higher.’

Its highest universally accepted reading is 53.9C (also the world's highest unchallenged reading). The 134F from 1913 was from a poor non-standard exposure.
